What a great neighbor. He farmed on land near to my dad's fields in Arnaud, Manitoba. He was the first farmer that hired me to harrow his field near our home when I was 12 years old.
We would watch him pass by our farm with his train of implements in tow, often a truck trailer and discer all hooked together on his way to his field.
He loved to golfing with the Janzen brothers of Arnaud. One day while practicing his drive on his own farm, he used the side of his house as a pack stop to return the golf ball he had just shot. The ball returned with great force and struck him in the face just under his eye. We all had a good laugh as he told this story. He was wise enough not to try that again. He lived alone through his farming years as a bachelor, with courage, optimism and a cheerful countenance.

What a dear uncle you were, Uncle Phil. We remember learning to water ski at St. Malo with your little boat, you flipping your great pancakes, golfing and downhill skiing with you. Everyone knew you as "Uncle Phil". You made us proud to have you as an Uncle.

U. Phil was not an uncle to my siblings and me by blood but he could just as well have been. Agree with Dave and Karin Boese about learning to water ski with his boat. Always enjoyed his company and his generosity of time and love even after he moved from Arnaud to St. Catherines. I would have loved to have visited with U. Phil in his last year and gone to his life celebration but did not hear of his death until too late.
