To the man I call my poppa:
My heart is broken and I don't think any amount of brown sugar on my cornflakes will fix me up This time, I'm a mell of a hess. You were by far the kindest soul and very best example of a man that I have ever known in my entire life. Thank you for setting that example for me. I can not even begin to tell you how much I appreciate your influence on my life. I credit you for my vast knowledge of all things "upnorth", help with my school projects involving nature, teaching me solid survival lessons and the value of hard work. I loved reminiscing stories about how you loved gramma and how things were so different way back then while you were chasing gramma around for smooches, popping your teeth out at me and us going head to head with funny remarks, quick wit, and a wicked sense of humour. Your laugh was the most contagious. I adore the very simple but great man you were. With my heavy heart I ask you one thing poppa... ever since I was knee high to a grasshopper you were willing to find me any "feller" or constantly harassed me if I myself had found a "feller" so you could walk me down the aisle one day. I didn't have enough time before you had to go but I did find one poppa and I'm gonna need you to be there. I will always remember you and believe me your memory will last forever. As I was right beside you when punched your ticket, I saw your pain fade away and I know you are in a far better place now. I will hold all of my greatest memories of you close to my heart. I love you, rest easy. And I'll chase gramma around for a smooch or two for ya <3

Poppa,
Today we are putting you in your final resting place. It is sad to see one of the most kind, selfless, and honest man be put to rest. I'll always remember up north, and all the amazing memories we had together. I'll remember riding on the tractor, fishing off the dock, feeding the ducks, and watching the deer in the morning. You are a big part of my childhood story And when I share my favourite parts of my life, you are in them. I am forever grateful for the time I had with you. All the joy you brought to everyone around you will always keep your memory alive. Thank you for being the best poppa a granddaughter could ask for, I am so lucky to of had you. I miss you.

I was always thankful for the gift he was for my children , what he taught them about how to be good people , how to treat others , and how to live the life of your choice . Even through the years of separation from the family I thought of him often as things came up in my life , old tractors , cheap American beer , Skippy doos , and fishing . When my own grandchildren decided to call me Poppa, I was honored to take on the challenge of living up to the title that Smitty held.
Rest in peace , it was a privilege to have known you

Last night i lost my poppa to a long battle with dementia although he may have forgotten who we were i know nobody could ever forget who he was.. i honestly am at a loss for words he tought me so much and helped everyone who needed a hand. Living up north with poppa and grandma i got to witness how genuine a man he truley was. Il always remember sneaking into the veggie patch to do some quality testing.. which always passed my taste test.. i learned how to fish and fillet i learned what it means to work hard while i marked and stacked wood for poppa to deliver to the neighbors for the winter season.. i remember hopping on his pride and joy massey tractor to remove huge tree stumps so his friend can start there own garden doing dump runs in his old ford dumper and watching bears scavenge through the dump while we tossed our garbage down into the pit. He tought me basic skills to live off the land and to cherish nature il always remember sneaking down to the cellar to eat beets in the jar and to toss a log into the furnace cause i thought it was the coolest thing. I remember being in his woodshop helping him with his projects tagging along in the car for the trip into town just cause i enjoyed the drive with him... he knew everyone and everyone knew him theres so much i can say about my poppa so much i still want to say but il always have my memories of him and i can only hope i can be half as good as him alot of what i learned from him i can pass down to my kids i wish i could bring them up north and let them experiance what i got to when i was younger.. i will always love it up there thanks to you poppa theres so much i am thankful for because of you.. i just want to say il miss you terribley but i know your up there having a beer relaxing in your chair looking down at all of us... and that your at peace and happy. I love you poppa thank you for everything.

Reat easy Poppa you gave me memories from as far back as i can remember. Fishing the Madawaska River, checking out the Bears at the dump, climbing on the old Tractors while you fixed them up, going on wood deliveries. But most importantly you were a selfless kind and caring gentleman who was always smiling. You will be greatly missed by many.

It was a horrible day yesterday, and a very long sleepless night, with many tears falling from me eyes!!! Our beloved Grandpa/Poppa has not been well the last couple days and I recieved word last night that he had passed away.
I can't begin to think of one great memory that stands out, as there were so many throughout my life that involved him!
You were a loving, caring, kind gentle soul and I honestly don't remember a single moment when you were in a bad or foul mood.
You were loved by so many people, none more then Grandma of course!
There wasn't a person that has met you, that would have nothing but great things to say about you! You made a friend with every person that crossed your path, you never judged a single soul or had the slightest bad thing to say about a person and if you did, you'd never say so. It was this kindness and your ability to have anyone that's feeling sad or upset, smilling with minutes of chatting with you, that really characterised the man you were!
I truly consider myself one lucky guy to have spent the time I have with you, especially up North in the bush dropping trees or out in the boat on the Madawaska River fishing, or riding shot gun in your bush truck, while we travelled the back roads, visiting your buddies up in the north!
As many great times as we shared over the years, I don't think I ever had a few moments like we had in this picture when with you.
I'd never say that I was the best guitar player, or the greatest singer for that matter; however, when you have had Grandma ask me over to play and sing you your favourite song, your reaction every single time made me feel like a great guitar player and singer.
I've never seen a tear in your eye my entire life and to watch you tap your feet, while sitting there with a tissue whipping tears from your eyes as I played and sang for you, is a memory I will forever hold onto!
There are no words to describe how much you'll be missed, but I can promise this, you will never, never ever be forgotten!
Thank you for always being you and Thank you for being such an amazing husband to Grandma! The happiest days of her life were with you by her side and she'll be well taken care by all of us, I promise you that!
RIP Grandpa, I'll miss you dearly!

although alzheimers took the man we knew some time ago, tonight we lost a great one. Glen "Smitty" Smith, passed away this evening, and we will miss him dearly. My kids will be hit hard with this, none more so than Brandon Hunt I would say as he spent a good part of his child hood with Poppa and Grandma up North. Brandon learned many things from Poppa, many experiences I am grateful for. He was a bush pile-it for poppa's firewood business, worked a pioneer saw mill, he has picked berries in the bush, with bears on the other side of the thicket, he has seen the dance of a small mouth bass while fishing at a dam, and has pulled a lake trout from a hole in the ice. He learned values by watching Poppa stoke a fire under the oil pan of an old Massey tractor in 40 below weather, to go pull a stranger out of a snow filled ditch, he learned to love nature, he learned to love life. Smitty was a great Father in law, he once tried to teach me that a snow mobile will turn sharper if you give it some gas... I promptly ran full throttle into the side of his brand new car... To Brandon Hunt, Amanda Ballantyne, Samantha Hunt, and the rest of the Smith / Ballantyne family, Poppa lost his memories to a terrible disease, but we still have ours...hold on to them Rest in Peace Smitty...
