Dennis & Linda Hassell, Toronto posted a condolence
Tuesday, January 14, 2020
We did not realize there was an online book of condolences, but my wife Linda and I remember Art as well now as then. He was taciturn and yet witty. He was tough-minded yet generous. He honoured his wife, and they flourished under the care each gave the other. We did not see him interact with his children and grandchildren, but the diversity of their lives and their confidence and openness speaks to his and Val's approach to parenting.
Two things I will never forget from his life Story: Art was a dedicated swimmer, as I am, and 2) Art booked the Casa Loma to celebrate his wife's 75th birthday. That took panache. I was honoured to MC that magical night.
Art took a meaningful interest in my strange calling as an arts missionary, and every facet of his and Val's support was meaningful to myself and my wife Linda. For example, Art asked good questions about where I wanted to go as a Christian artist, and how I was planning to get there.
Art's life was literally and metaphorically, a "work of ART".

Our heartfelt sympathy to all the family on the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. Art was a truly gentle man. The community has lost a valuable leader. We first met Art, Val and family during the mid eighties at a poultry convention, where we happened to be seated at the same table. He was an industry leader and a much respected man. What a wonderful life to celebrate!
