Mervin was a lovely man and I was glad to have had the chance to know him . A kind , generous soul and a true gentleman . I know he has been a wonderful father to John and a loving father-in -law to Isobel . His grandsons were lucky to have such a good man for a grandfather . I will remember how he always got up to greet me warmly and seemed genuinely pleased to see me . He always believed in the best of people and never seemed to have a bad word for anyone . He was simply "a good man " from a time of manners and standards and decency . He will be missed . .

He was a fine man. A man of old fashioned poise and courtesy. A real gentleman who must have been a very balanced Police Officer. John, as I have said before, you were so lucky to have been graced by the presence of both Jean and Mervin - which just deepens the loss. I will miss hearing of him and seeing him when he was in Texas. I am glad we had a dinner the last time he was here. I loved the way he called you Son. As Lorna says, he will be missed. I suspect that he leaves us with much fewer regrets than most, for he was so obviously such a decent soul.

Although I met Jean only once and Mervin a couple of times, they were clearly devoted to each other. Mervin was an absolute gentleman of the old school and will be missed, but I am sure will leave the legacy of great memories. Thinking of you John and Isobel.

Dear John and Isobel, So sorry to hear of Mervyn's passing. I always enjoyed meeting Jean and Mervyn at Christmas and they were so charming in a low-key and down-to-earth way. Not that Mervyn didn't have a sly sense of humour! I'm sure he will be missed by all the family.
