Dearest Sofia and Paavo,
I only recently learned of Sofia's passing. I consider Sofia my friend, my mentor, and a bright light that shone so brilliantly she lit a path for all of us to humbly follow. We watched her dance and paint her life with vibrant colours, great compassion and generosity, an unflinching passion for justice, and a joy and softness that touched all who had the great privilege of knowing her. She was so kind, so open, so inclusive. I will miss her greatly. How I wish I was able to talk to her before she left us. I am grateful to her for so many things -- our trip to Cuba, her painting lessons to my son, our visits talking animately how to make the world a better place, her visits with Pav and my parents. It saddens me greatly to know that I won't be able to sit underneath that beautiful tree on Greenlane watching her weave baskets or work her magic with watercolours. Dearest Sofia, thank you for being my friend, and for making my world, our world, a better place. I miss you greatly and hope to see you one day on the other side, so that we can pick up where we left of. All my love to you, and Pav.

I love how passionate Sofia was about early literacy in children and how her face just lit up when she saw families using the library. I will really miss seeing her smile and listening to her kind words. God Bless

As a friend and chair of the Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association (CCFA) of Niagara I wish to extend my sincere condolences:
So sorry to hear of Sofia's passing this afternoon, Sunday, March 6. I knew Sofia for many years through mutual political and social justice causes. She was a very articulate woman who understood the issues she championed inside out. She worked tirelessly for those causes. Sofia and Paavo have been members of CCFA Niagara almost since our founding. She was very supportive of our work placing Cuba related article in a Finnish newspaper she wrote for and for many invitations to her Brock Radio show, on which Paavo did the tech. work.
May she rest in peace for a job well done.

We loved Sofia's openness and questing spirit and her strong sense of social justice. We loved the pieces she wrote for Kaiku and have missed them in the last few years. We wish we had gotten to know her better.
Vappu and I were deeply saddened to learn of her passing.

One of the first members that I met at the Lakeside Pumphouse Artists' Association was Sofia.
She impressed me with her friendliness, creativity, and passion for her many endeavors.
A truly unique individual and will be missed.

Fond memories and laughs with Sophie at art class, demonstrations swimming in the sunshine. A free spirit is now free indeed.
