My sincere condolences to the family on the passing of John Smith. From 1976 to 1980 as a high school and post-secondary student I found summer employment at Smith Farms. I have told countless times, both in personal conversation and in public address, the leadership lessons I learned from John.
In the mid-1990’s while travelling between St. Catharines and Hamilton, I left the QEW one day simply to drive to the farm and thank him in person. When settled in his office, I told him of the power of his example for me. His response? A quiet smile without words.
If those I lead remember me the way I remember John, I will have done well. John is one of my heroes.
I am sad at the thought that he had to battle Alzheimers, and at the thought of his passing. May you experience God’s comfort and peace.

We only met John a few times, the first at our daughter's wedding in 2003. We remember him as such a gentle, welcoming, intelligent man. We stayed with Linda and John at the farm and he was so proud of the orchards, the processing and beauty of his wonderful enterprise. He and Linda had such a close and loving relationship, it was so warming to be in their presence. They are very lucky to have rediscovered each other and had the happy times together that they so deserved.
Our thoughts and love are with John and Linda at this sad time.

Ralph and I are so sorry to hear about John's passing. We were privileged to meet John through Linda Edgar, his devoted partner for over fifteen years. We shared many good times with John and Linda. His quick wit, intellect, adventurous spirit and warmth made him one of our dearest friends. We will always remember and be touched by his generosity and the wonderful times we spent with him over a glass of wine listening to his stories about life and farming, which he loved so much. May he rest in peace.

Condolences to the Smith families. Jenifer it was nice to meet your siblings and mother Gail.
I recall as a Fruit grower many associations from cherry production and the processing peach plant. John took the time to show that new endeavor to me and I felt a part of it when contributing to its supply.
Growers and processors alike had to deal with the eradication of plum pox virus disease to maintain production. John had a keen sense of observation and was mindful of its elimination. In recent years I became more aware of his casual sports activities and other interests. He was important to our Community and the Tender Fruit industry and will be remembered.

It has been a tough journey for family and friends of John these past few years. Such a vibrant, fun and intelligent man who I first met in the early 60's shipping sours to Biggar's and then at Guelph where he quarterbacked the '66 OAC football team that beat up our 1st year Aggie team! Will always cherish the visit's with Smitty while picking up cherries at Cherry Lane, learning so much in a short time and seeing him enjoy chewing on a cigar. Will miss him every time I am at the farm..an amazing steward of their beautiful Niagara farm.

My sincere condolences to John’s family, on the loss of a great man.
John and I were heavily involved in the 1st Vineland Scout Troup. When I was promoted from Troop Leader to Assistant Scout Master in 1955, John was chosen to be Troup Leader, because of his demonstrated leadership and mentoring gifts.
In September 1955. John led 1st Vineland to a 2nd successive 1st place trophy, at the fall Fruitbelt District Competition Camporee, held at Wetaskawin Scout Camp, just south of St. Catharines.
In 1959, John was chosen to represent Fruitbelt District at the 10th World Scout Jamboree in the Philippines.
In 1959, 1960 & 1961, John gave leadership at the early August all-week 1st Vineland troop camp at Haliburton Scout Reserve.
I personally treasure all the fond memories of my scouting days with John.

To John’s family, please accept my most sincere condolences on his passing.
John and I were classmates in the “Hort” option at O.A.C., University of Guelph, graduating in 1966 along with the rest of our option, Ian, Ron, Grant and Albert. Although I moved to Alberta in 1981, I often visited John on summer trips to Ontario, when we would reminisce about those zany, fun university days of long ago. I saw him for the final time last summer, but the visit I remember best was several years ago, when he was especially kind to my 3 year-old grandson, taking him out to one of the orchards to pick cherries, a novel experience for a small westerner.
John was always a good friend, fun-loving and hospitable, and dedicated to making a difference in Ontario agriculture, especially the Niagara fruit industry.
