I was very sorry I could not be at the tribute to Werner. I have great admiration for all he gave to the city through his writing and his dedicated promotion of the arts in Peterborough. He was so good humoured and so eager to spread the news about whatever we were doing at the Theatre Guild or at Showplace. I miss seeing him at events around the city. A life well lived.

Werner was a high school classmate of mine. I moved to Manitoba after high school and only moved back to the Niagara region again 5 years ago. I have pleasant memories of his gentle spirit. I wish I could have met him again after so many years, but I had no idea where he was. Condolences to his sisters. Sorry to hear of your loss.

It was a somber day today at band. Werner was such a big part of Peterborough New Horizons Bands. Always a smile, an anecdote, and oh that bari sax playing!! He often spoke of his family and his beloved friend, Nancy. So many chats about jazz and the music scene in Peterborough. Rest In Peace, my friend.

Werner and I grew up together, were in high school together and then enjoyed travels to the New England states on photography excursions. We would reach the day's destination, choose where we would dine that evening and proceed to wander creating images, discussing life, our observations, his unique views, discussions of events he covered for the newspaper.
Later in life we would enjoy meals and I would enjoy the back stories of entertainers he met, many of these never meant to be published. He loved the entertainment scene he wrote of and became involved and loved performing on his saxophone. Werner was the quintessential 'air-saxophone' performer.....he adapted to not having his beloved instrument with him and that it was not always appropriate to play in a small pub.
Lifting this pint to you, Werner....miss you so much
George

I remember Werner with great fondness and gratitude. Early in the days of our charity "Jamaican Self Help" he was a great supporter because, in the greatness of his huge heart, he understood the suffering of others,. even others far away.
His cheerfulness and interest in others will be greatly missed in many Peterborough circles. May he rest in peace, and his loved ones be comforted.

Can't believe you are gone, Werner. Such a spark of life. Had great times when you visited out west. Never a dull moment with you around.
Would have loved to hear your music. You spoke fondly of it. You will be missed by us all.

So sad to hear of Werner's passing. I worked with Werner for 12 years at the Peterborough Examiner. He was so kind, gentle and understanding to all.
I still have my 2 sets of gem ear-rings Werner gifted to me.
May the family, friends and co-workers find peace in all that was so precious, gracious and giving about this very Gentle Giant.

My condolences to the Bergen family. This notice came as quite a shock. Even though I haven't seen Werner in many years, I can still remember the fun we had in our late teens and early twenties. I can hear his loud and deep chuckles as we joked about many things. Hopefully memories like that can sustain his family through the coming days, weeks and years.

RIP Werner Bergen! Sad to see my friend and former colleague pass away at 67!
He epitomized the saying "Gentle Giant!" He had many interest including rock/gem collecting. One of the constant noises in his house was the roaring rock cleaner!
I was fortunate when my marriage fell apart Werner took me in and I lived with him for several months until if found a place to live, no mean task in Peterborough!
Since we both retired we met at our favorite laundromat at Reid and Parkhill, two old men catching up on personal; news while folding laundry, lol! Ironically or what, I was set to do my laundry Friday morning but something told me to leave it. It was the day Werner died!
