Obituary of David Harold Honsberger

Honsberger, David Harold (July 22, 1936 – March 26, 2019)

Husband of Linda, and father to Mark & Teresa Barich (Richard) and beloved granddaughters Ally, Rachel and Kate. Fortunately, dad never forgot who we were. Predeceased by sister Doreen Fretz and brother Robert Honsberger.

Harold passed away after an 11 day slumber in his 83rd year. After this re-energizing sleep he will play cards once again with his old pals in heaven. Harold resided at Albright Manor for the past seven years as he suffered dementia and a slow decline in his abilities to function. Dad often cursed the place but loved the ladies who gave him kind, compassionate care on a daily basis.

Dad was the ultimate cribbage champion and looked forward to our Sunday visits so he could further hone his exceptional card skills. He still had the ability to strategize his play and count his cards. Dads unwavering luck with gambling also seemed to give him the “upper hand” as he always seemed to have the good cards and the determination to not be beat.

Although grumpy by nature Dad had a big heart. Always a community minded person who would help out whenever or where ever needed. He lied about his age at 17 to become a Jordan volunteer firefighter and remained so until his retirement in his 60’s. Also, a lifelong member of the Jordan Lions club putting in countless hours so our small community could enjoy sports activities. He was also an avid hunter in his younger days and an accomplished fisherman, hockey coach, baseball coach, stable hand, wienie roaster, ground hog soup cooker, tailtwister, farmer, factory worker…..and the list goes on. A life well lived.

Harold lived in Jordan on the same farm his entire life. As a child he likely helped plant some of the trees that still stand around Jordan Station United Church. He will be laid to rest at Oaklawn Cemetery under one of those towering trees reunited with his long-lost family members.

A private family service will be held with a memorial at a later date. Dad, it’s time to take your boots off and put your wings on. You will be missed. Xo

Donations can be made in Harold’s memory to Albright Manor or Jordan Station United Church.
