Mrs. Gretsinger was amongst the most influential persons in my life. She was my teacher, coach, boss and mentor.
Lincoln County was truly blessed to have such a wise, caring and productive citizen. Mrs. Gretsinger taught upwards of 10,000 students the basics in the birds and the bees, health care and physical education. She was an exemplary teacher who went out of her way to inspire a sense of well being and esteem in her students. She coached at least 6 different teams at any given time and dedicated her after school hours to coaching gymnastics, track and field, badminton and a host of other sports. In consequence, BDSS gained a fine reputation for its sporting activities.
Although BDSS had many excellent athletes, Mrs. Gretsinger's manner of teaching brought out and developed our natural talents. She was compassionate, occasionally stern, but only pushed us to be the best we could be. One time, just before a big gymnastics competition, I began to experience menestrual cramping. I was scheduled to compete on the floor in under half an hour but felt too sick. I informed Mrs. Gretsinger of this, adding that I would be dropping out of the competition entirely. Her eyes shone like steel when she responded: "You will be competing. I'll have none of that here. We didn't train all year for you to drop out of the competition." I felt bad. Mrs. Gretsinger was generally selfless and compassionate towards her students and I didn't want to let her down. So, I competed that day - winning first in every event I entered!
Mrs. Gretsinger also trained me as a coach and employed me in her Kinsatics Club, a popular children's gymnastics club enjoyed by many hundreds of children from Lincoln County. She drilled into my head over and over again how important it was, first and foremost, to treat EVERY child with care. We were never permitted to harm any child in any way: not by improper spotting, harsh crticism nor by pushing the children beyond their limits. To the best of my information, no Kinastics member ever suffered injury under our watch.
Mrs. Gretsinger also reminded us to keep perspective; that there was more to life than sport. And, indeed there is.
What a wonderful and inspiring lady. Mrs. Gretsinger had a heart of gold and enough caring to spread amongst thousands of students -and more. Although her children probably never knew, their mom also ensured us gymnasts treated her kids like rock stars.
Love to you Ruthie, Ellie and Lorne! Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, but love leaves a memory no one can steal. Love lives forever.
GOD bless!

Gretsinger Family;
Our condolences to you all.
We have so many great memories with Mom and Dad, and music usually brought us all together at someone's home, including yours.
Memories are what we have now, so hold them close and enjoy them in the years to come.
God Bless.

My very sincere condolences to the Gretsinger family. This strong and loving family, who are so committed to each other, have lost a well loved and integral part of their team. I value the friendship and good times Van and I shared together over time and the visits we have had over the past year. I will always remember Van’s positive and encouraging manner and most especially those April phone calls...”Are you ready to golf?”
Rest well Van.

I am so sad and sorry to hear this. Mrs. Gretsinger was hands down my most favourite teacher and gymnastics coach at BDSS. She was kind, patient and encouraging. I remember her wearing Adidas track suits and I could usually find her around the gym! My thoughts and prayers for her family.

Our deepest condolences to the entire Gretsinger family and especially to our dear Lorne, Ruth and Ellen. Arriving as a new teacher to the BDSS staff in 1978, no one demonstrated more to us what was expected of a teacher and community member in Beamsville than the Gretsinger family. A wonderful and special chapter in the life of our town and schools closes with her passing. Thank you Ruth, Ellen and Lorne for sharing your magnificent parents with us.

Dear Ruth, Ellen, Lorne & families,
I wish to offer my sincere condolences on the loss of your Mom & Nanny. May your memories of this amazing, strong woman warm your hearts and ease your loss. My own memories of Mrs. Gretsinger span many years from riding in Van's Van (which was a white station wagon at that time!) to Jacob Beam School (she was the carpool!) to enjoying the stories & wisdom of a gracious lady who was living a fulfilling life. Your mom was a role model for me at a time when many women did not have a family and a career. She had a keen sense of humour & a genuine caring heart. I will miss our chats & our time together on the deck.
With love, Jenn
