As a tall person people often view us as strong and scary. And hopefully after meeting us they realize we are not so scary. And Gerry was taller and gentler than most, including myself. It certainly never took long to figure out behind his strong big handshake was a caring man with a soft soul. I still recall when I was a teenager helping out my father Jake Durksen and the other Menno Men working on Eden, or Camp Crossroads, or church renovations. These men would quietly and diligently work until the job was done, with never any self promotion or pride. Even when sincere "thank you"s and recognition were extended to them for their efforts, they quietly demurred such adulation.
May we remember them for all they have done during their lives, not only with their work, but more importantly with their examples as good Christian men.
