Dear Geoffrey,
I was greatly shocked and saddened to discover by accident that my cousin Mary Lou had passed away last October 2nd. I usually contacted her every Christmas. This year I sent her a card, then I emailed her (which got returned) and finally, I tried to phone her (which was disconnected). When I checked the internet I found her obituary. I felt so sorry that I had not contacted her last summer or tried to visit her in Vineland. I had been meaning to do so for a while.
Mary Lou was my cousin on my mother's side. She had given me some interesting family history at the time I spoke to her in December 2018. I would have liked to have heard more from her. She told me about her volunteer work at the Mennonite Crisis Centre (phone line) around the holidays. I enjoyed our yearly phone conversations But alas there will be no more.
The last time I saw Mary Lou was on her Beamsville farm (I remember a few animals) when Norman and I took my mother Ruth Jamieson (from Ottawa) to see her and she showed us our grandmother's grave, as well as her mother's (Sylvia) and Mary's (another aunt) graves. My husband Norman was just starting to teach ESL so Mary Lou gave him her old English Language textbooks. She was very kind and generous like that.
I also remember years ago when we drove to the Beamsville farm for a picnic lunch with my mother Ruth, my husband Norman and my younger sister Catherine (who was supposed to stay on the farm for a week but that didn't happen). That was the only time we met Geoffrey who was a young boy at the time, and father David. It seemed that we brought all the wrong food because the Eden family was very much into all-natural organic food. The whole family was ahead of their time which I applaud. I totally agree with that lifestyle now myself.
Geoffrey, please accept Norman's and my sincere condolences for the loss of your mother. You must surely be missing her at this special time, Christmas. I regret not phoning her more and visiting her so much. I wish I could turn back time but I can't.
I will miss Mary Lou very much.
I have contacted my sister Valerie, who lives in Victoria BC as well.
Sincerely,
Sandra Morra

We will miss our strong warm friend. She was funny and generous.. She was always interested in everything, She supported others through pain and loss and she showed grace in her own pain and loss. She tackled her own handicaps with a feisty resolve. She kept exercising even when she had to use her walker and she kept reading to residents in the United Mennonite home--knowing that Parkinsons was affecting her throat she was determined to keep comforting them with stories as long as she could. Such a life of energy and enthusiasm, willing to tackle anything from raising farm animals to creating musical instruments. We last saw her driving off in her own sporty way in her little Smart Car. I especially enjoy remembering the bright eyed way she had of looking at us sideways and grinning as she described her favorite open roofed Smart Car--telling us how she loved to show the world that she could still bomb around and be sporty with the wind in her hair.
Bless you dear Mary Lou.

For our dear Mary Lou "Emily" Eden. Your love, kindness, generosity, wisdom, intelligence and humour has enriched all of those who knew you. To Geoff, our greatest sympathies. I have no doubt that she is parsing these sentences for the most egregious grammarian violations and wagging her finger at me as I type. All our love.

Our sincere condolences to you Geoff on the passing of your mother. We enjoyed such good times with your parents so many years ago. Your mother was such a fireball of fun energy who had the innate ability to control your father with true, joyful exuberance. Always in our hearts and memories.

Mary Lou was such a ray of sunshine when she manned the front desk at the United Mennonite Home. While our Mom was a resident there, we often took her for afternoon coffee on the main floor where Mary Lou volunteered. She was so kind to us and always had Mom laughing. We truly appreciated those moments.

Peter and I were sorry to hear of Mary Lou's death. She was a valued colleague at Niagara College for many years. Her enjoyment of students and her kindness were matched by her sense of humour. She was a lovely person.

Coming into work everyday was so much brighter with Mary Lou at the front desk. She was a good friend that I got to know personally. Knowing that I will see her again someday in heaven makes this loss much easier to take. Miss yu Mary Lou☹️
