We would like to extend to your family our heartfelt condolences in the passing of Ben. I had a great respect for Ben as did my father-in-law Gary Pillitteri who also sends his condolences. Between Gary and myself we worked with Ben for 25 years in political life, and many more years before/after that as community members. We have also enjoyed the friendship of Ben's family, Lloyde and Angela.
Ben was by no means a push over. He knew his stuff and was never bullied into doing what he thought was wrong by any politician or CEO. He was a man of principal and he was a major contributor to the viability of the municipality. Sometimes he held a little too tight to those municipal purse strings but mostly for good reason.
Ben was definitely a part of the old guard that always without question put service to community above self. He was honest, firm, fair, believed in user pay yet held charitable passion for the disadvantaged, frugal with tax dollars, believed in building infrastructure and was knowledgeable about every part of this municipality from his experience and those before him. He provided incredible institutional memory, I valued every bit of information he would provide. He helped me be a better person as a councillor and community member. He provided me strong direction.
To a slight fault, it was hard to change Ben's mind once he had made it up and the report was written, lol. I found the best way with Ben was not to disagree after the fact but to provide him with sincerity, reason and logic before the fact. Ben would hesitate then say to me or other councillors, let me think about it, and he would. Sometimes he would also tell me, you make a good point, that comment told me my point had a chance of success. That comment, from a person of Ben's knowledge would be quite a compliment. Later when Ben would read his report and in it contained a few points I or another councillor had made, he would look at you with that smile of his and almost it seemed like he would give you a wink. Kind of like telling you, see I listened and respected what you said and some of your points are in the report.
It is a shame to lose someone like Ben. But you know, what I think he would say is that every road, water main or sewer has to be replaced. Just as people do to make way for the next generation. Ben, may you rest in peace in God's good graces.

Dear Delores and family,
Together with Lenna, I want to send you our deepest condolences on your great loss of Ben, whose friendship with me goes back to at least 1955, when we both began our surveyor's career at R. Blake Erwin O.L.S. in Niagara Falls, where we worked on many a survey together and qualified as Ontario Land Surveyors. I will always cherish the honour of acting as Best Man along with Cousin Alex, at you wedding in 1958. Although our careers diverged, we both finished them serving local municipalities.
I am deeply thankful to him for the privilege of having had him as a friend.

Delores, I’m so sorry to hear about Ben’s passing. I remember when you were married – I was just a kid at “the chapel”, and I thought he was a lucky guy. And later I got to spend a summer on his survey crew (for a new Highway 406 – I think the mosquitos in the bush were as big as hummingbirds). We gave a lot of blood that summer. But fond memories, even though I think he won every chess game (every lunch) all summer. I still remember a principle from him – only carry one chain (100’ measuring tape), one sledge hammer, etc., (in contrast to a crew I was on with a different company the previous summer) because, he said, if you have two you’ll be guaranteed to leave one behind somewhere. Anyway, I’ve never forgotten him as a role model. I've only been able to have a few brief chats since I moved away and one nice evening visit Laurena and my Mom and I had with you and Ben. But we’ll see him again.

I remember Ben as a fine gentleman and a dedicated and devoted employee of the town of Niagara-on-the Lake. I saw first-hand on a number of occasions how committed Ben was to ensuring that town citizens would receive the best services possible that could be delivered by the town's works department which was under his supervision. My prayers are with Ben and his family. May he rest in peace.
