“Al” DeRoche, a great man lost far to soon. God must have needed a kind and caring Staff Sergeant to maintain order as Heaven is overwhelmed during this pandemic. “While we are mourning the loss of our friend, others are rejoicing to meet him behind the veil”. Al, you were a great police officer and an inspiration to so many of us that came after you. We shared a love for our profession as police officers, and worked with our wives in the same trenches. Our daughters both share the love of the violin and put the love of music into our lives. Connie, Jason, Jeremy and Katrina, our deepest sympathy and prayers are with you all as you cope with the loss of such a well loved and respected man. The blue candle is lit in respect to Al’s dedication to the police profession and to honour his legacy.
God Bless,

To Connie, Al's children and his siblings (close family and friends): Al was a very special person. He was beautiful inside and out. His smile was radiant and his warmth was tangible. A brave knight in a modern world. He was gifted at comforting others. He was so proud of all his children and of all those he held dear. Your words at his funeral were a beautiful tribute to your father and of the love you shared. Thank you for sharing with us. The courage it took to stand in your grief and speak of your dad, show you have his strength. I pray that strength helps you to carry on, as he would want you to. I know he would want you to keep shining your own special light in the world. He would want you to take good care of yourselves and eachother. My heart goes out to each of you who grieve his loss. I know he will live on in every heart he touched / in love, memories and stories. I am sure he will find a way to continue supporting those he loves. My thoughts, prayers and love go out to each of you.
Sincerely,

As Katrina's violin teacher for many years, I remember being struck by the way Al's face lit up when she walked into the room. You could see that listening to her play gave him such unspeakable joy and pride. Al seemed to be the kindest, most supportive and forever encouraging father. I always thought him to be a truly genuine man who had a way of making people feel good about themselves. He will be sorely missed but I believe the world is just a little better off because he was in it.

My deepest sympathies, Connie & Family. I first met Al in the 1980’s when he was assigned to the Niagara Combined Forces Drug Section. We fast became friends and were known as the “brothers from another mother” because of our similar physical appearance although Al was the better looking “brother”... Al later became my eldest daughter’s godfather for which we were very honoured. He was truly both an officer and a gentleman who will be sadly missed by all who he touched with his generosity of spirit and good humour. RIP Al. Larry Hay former RCMP Niagara

Dear Connie, Jeremy, Katrina and Jason, I wish to express my deepest sympathy to you all. It was with great sadness to hear from my Best Friend Al, that he was struck with a fatal illness that was to take his life. I met Al and worked with him in the late 80’s when he was assigned to a joint unit in Niagara. Being far away from home, Al took me under his wing and treated me like we were Brothers. It wasn’t long until we realized that we both came from a Rural lifestyle. Moving away from the Region, years later, Al and I continued our friendship. Al’s dream was to operate large Farm Equipment. Being able fulfil that dream, Al traveled out west for several years where he spent his holiday time working long hours on a tractor (thank-you Connie). Al and I grew even closer and my family always looked forward to Uncle Al’s yearly outing at our Family Farm. Our last visit is when he accompanied Jeremy to his current job in BC. Our 30+ year friendship remained as strong as ever and we had brotherly conversations until days before his passing. Al will be sadly missed as he left a heart print on all of us. We will lovingly remember him forever.

Our deepest condolences to Connie, Jason, Jeremy and Katrina (and new husband - congratulations - what an act of love to move your wedding into this COVID lockdown). Alan was all the right stuff with a big heart and a big smile. You couldn't help but love him. It feels like a piece of me (Tim) has been removed. The Berings and the DeRoches have always been very close. With 2 DeRoche brothers and one DeRoche sister marrying two Bering sisters and one Bering brother, the two families have close blood ties. On top of that, we all grew up together and share the best of memories for life. We are more than first cousins in reality. We feel Alan's loss deeply and so please know that our sympathies are deep. May God help all of you and all of us through this loss

Two things I remember about Al. When he was in Grimsby on my dayshift he would ask me if any calls were holding. When I said nothing holding he said 'ok let's go up to silverdale range and fire off some bullets. And we went up and did target practice for an hour. The other memory i have was when i was transferred to his fifth in Niagara Falls. I was walking passed his office on my first dayshift when he called me into the office. He said to me ' Niagara Parks Police is putting on a 3 day high angle rescue course.' I said, ' but Al I gave a fear of heights.' He replied, ' oh you will be fine. You will get to go in a jet boat and a helicopter. And you won't have to come in for nightshift.' I did it and thanked him for believing I can overcome my fear of heights. I will miss you Al. You were the best boss and nicest person to be around. Condolences to Connie and the whole family. Richard Lukos

I have so many fond memories of my cousin and dear friend Alan. These memories have been running through my mind almost continually the past month ever since Al first told me of his cancer.
We all had so many adventures together growing up and spent countless hours combing the hills and forests of the Effingham and the Short Hills area seeking out treasures, fox holes, creeks and whatever else caught our attention. Al spent many summers with us working the family farms together and we learned so much from our uncles, older cousins and siblings. These are many of the experiences that shaped Al into the incredible man he was.
When Alan decided to go into law enforcement I couldn’t have been more proud of him. He loved helping others and being as close to the action on the streets as possible. He told me many times this was where he felt he most belonged.
Alan always had a way of showing up when I needed him most. He was a friend who always listened, didn’t judge, helped when he could and was even a shoulder to cry on a time or two. When I got sick, he was there with support, encouragement and his constant sense of humor reminding me of better times that would be again. I wished I could have done the same for him when he got cancer. We were supposed to grow old together reminiscing of the past, swapping stories of family and grandchildren and resuming our travels. But alas that just wasn’t meant to be.
Alan, I will miss you always; my cousin, my friend, my brother.
My deepest condolences to Connie and his family who must now carry on without this most special husband, father and brother in their lives.
