Uncle Joe was one of the most light-hearted and genuine people I ever met. His signature laugh was so very infectious. Just thinking of it brings a smile to my face. Sending all of the family much love and light.

Sending condolences to the entire family. Many “Arbuthnot” family memories! When you met Joe there was always a wonderful smile, a twinkle in his eye and generally a comment or brief story that brought laughter. Share the memories!

Ron and I are so sorry to read of Joe's passing. He was a wonderful neighbor , even if he didn't like my Dad starting his lawnmower at 8 a.m. on a Sunday morning. He had such a great sense of humour and was always ready with some kind of a joke. Our deepest sympathy to all of your family. I know he will be missed.

Joanne, Joy and Roy we (the Morris family) David, Karen and Jackie, send our sincere condolences for the loss of your Dad. We were not aware that Joe was at Niagara Gardens or we would have visited him. Your write-up was very similar to the one for Dad's 102 birthday a couple of weeks ago. They were both dispatch riders. I went all through Power Glen School with having Joe around always. I went to 4H club at his house and his wife Myrtle taught us sewing. Joy and I went through the same grades, if memory serves me. My brother just said to me today that having Joe around at school made his day great. He really enjoyed talking with your Dad. I'm sure Jackie would remember him as well. Your Dad was a great guy and affected many kids lives. Again, so sorry for your loss.

Joanne, Joy and Roy and families - So very sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. He was the last of the Hill crowd that chummed together. They had a lot of good times playing cards and partying. That generation is a great loss to us all.
Sincerely - Nikki (Oblinski) and Dave Stager

Joe was great guy, I worked with him when I first got hired at the Lincoln County Board of Education back in 1978. I was just 18 years old, still "wet behind the ears" and West Park was one of the first schools I worked in as a relief caretaker. Joe was Head Caretaker at West Park and was very kind and helpful to me but clearly was also a no-nonsense kind of guy, the kind of guy you clearly didn't want to disappoint. And he drove a corvette! How cool was that? I thought that was so awesome.
As I rose through the ranks of our Union at work (CUPE Local 152) I later learned from many of the old-timers I worked with (also former WW2 vets) about when they decided back in the day to get together to form a Union. Of course, Joe Arbuthnot was a name that was always mentioned, he was one of those originals at that historic meeting (at Memorial School, if I recall the story correctly) when the boys brought the Union in. That really impressed me to later learn that tidbit of personal history about Joe.
Everywhere I worked in the school board over the next 15+ years (and I think I worked at all the schools at one time or another) people always spoke highly of Joe Arbuthnot. He left quite an impression on those that had the pleasure of knowing him, including myself. He was a great guy and highly respected. A natural leader of men. RIP Joe.
Please accept my condolences and deepest sympathies for your loss.
