I had perhaps an unusual connection to Dave and Joanne. I first met Dave at Abilene Christian College (now University) as a fellow Canadian. I also sang and travelled with Dave in the ACC Men's Glee Club for at least a semester in about 1962/63. Then I didn't meet Dave as well as Joanne until they moved to St. Anns to be closer to their children & grandchildren. I always enjoyed speaking with Dave & Joanne at several New Years gatherings at the Ellis's with both being quiet but determined to do the right thing by their family, neighbours and church family. We offer our condolences to Joanne and family and acknowledge that we have the hope of meeting our loved ones again.

Joanne
Joanne words are hard to express at a time like this. Knowing Dave is with our creator does not soften your loss. As you celebrate Dave's life Gerry and I would like you to know that your loss is felt by us and that we have very fond memories of you both.
Your visit and staying with us while we celebrated occasions for mutual friends will always bring a fond memory. Of course when Dave, Marvin and Gerry sang people always seemed to notice and have something kind and generous to say. Knowledge of Dave being with our Lord and Saviour will bring peace for you. WE are thinking and praying for you today and the future. Praying the message offered will touch those that are near and dear to you both and that the meaning will become clear and personal to all those listening.

Dave was a blessing to so many people throughout his life. I am but one of them.
I am looking forward to thanking him for that personally, when I get to the wonderful place where he is already.
May the rest of us still in this life remember Dave fondly with one tear filled eye because he is no longer with us and one joy-filled eye as we remember that he is with our Lord.
My greetings to all of the family,
Al Drinkwalter

We extend our deepest sympathies to you and your family.
I remember Dave as a kind, caring neighbour. He was great with our youngest, Bryce. Bryce loved going next door and talking to him; Dave was very patient as Bryce was quite the talker. We were sorry to see you go when you moved down east to be with your family.
We have such fond memories of your years as our neighbour.
Again, please accept our condolences for your loss.

My condolences on your loss. I remember Mr. Toews as a caring and kind math teacher at Churchill High School in Thunder Bay. He helped make me into a life long 'mathie', never afraid to tackle numbers and equations. A huge thank you to him.

Dear JoAnne,
I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved husband, Dave. I have such wonderful memories of your family...our family...the Thunder Bay Church of Christ. I remember all the fun gatherings hosted by you and Dave and count those as some of my fondest memories.
I remember the night my father passed away. I had just drifted off to sleep after reading this poem. I share it with you now as it brought me peace despite my grief. May you be filled with peace as Dave now is with the Father.
Gone From My Sight
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone."
Gone where?
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"
And that is dying...
