Paula was such a light in my life. She always embraced me with the biggest hug and smile every time we met. I had the pleasure of going on a trip of lifetime to Italy with Paula, Patti and Denise. I will forever hold on to those adventures and laughs we had. Even though I usually only saw Paula a few times a year- I knew we had a special bond. She always made me feel extra special with her kind words and our laughs together. I will continue to send love and prayer to Patti, Adam and Greg as they grieve this wonderful person. I will forever cherish all the memories we had together, such a bright gift of love and light. We will miss you Paula but your laughter will be with us forever.
Love you always

We lost our friend, our daughter's Godmother (Kuma), and our shining light in a sometimes not-so-nice world. Our Paula was truly a gift from God. She epitomized love and there is no one else just like her. In her most difficult times (and she has endured so many) she was able to put on her smile and find the light. She has touched the lives of so many and she has always had a positive influence on those she met. Our hearts are broken and have forever changed. She made this place so much better. She made us better. Paula, we love you and we will always miss you. Thank you for being such a wonderful role model to our daughter and such a dear friend to us all.

I am greatly saddened to hear of Paula’s passing. I first met her at Bishop Ryan and she was always one of the kindest most pleasant people you could meet despite all of the challenges she was facing. I had the privilege of reconnecting with her again later on in life and was reminded of what a beautiful person she was. My deepest sympathies go out to all of her family, her husband and closest friends.

I knew Paula from BR and, although we didn't see each other much over the years, whenever we did, it was like time hadn't passed and we'd talk like two teens again. She was beautiful inside and out and had a laugh that made you smile every single time. Her kindness came through with every conversation. I'm sad her smile is not something we will get to see again-- her spirit lives on in the people she touched throughout her life. I'm so sorry for your loss, my thoughts are with you.

My childhood friend. The years have passed and I have always wondered about you. I have reflected on the many memories we've shared as children growing up in an inner-city neighbourhood in Hamilton that had such depth and meaning to me. We parted ways when I moved away in grade 8 but I always had such love and admiration for you and your family. I visited your home on Ashford often and joined you for birthday parties, lunch hours and playdates. I recall with such tenderness the love your family had for you- the sparkle in your Dad's eye when you'd walk through the front door, your brother Adam's adorable little smile and your Mom Patricia, often walking home beside us, reflecting on our school day. May you know that even though the years and miles separated us, you were a fond memory of my childhood. You were a supportive friend, a loving girl who always sought opportunities to include others. Sounds like you carried that forward in your life and showed love and light to all those who crossed your path. May your soul rest easy knowing you left an imprint on other people's hearts and may your grieving family look to the sky and be comforted by all the ways you made the world a beautiful place. Your friend, Laura Brown from St. Columba

In her too short life, Paula Smith showed how one person can impact many. We are all better for having known her. Her focus and determination, genuine concern for others, her honesty, sense of humour and her sharp mind – were gifts she gave to us. We are blessed. One of my most meaningful trips was travelling with Paula and Patti to Italy to visit relatives. Despite continuous rain, Paula met each day with a smile, a cappuccino and a sense of adventure. Our discussions were lively, our laughter hearty. Her passing challenges us to keep her spirit alive – when we smile at another, lend a caring ear and respond with an open heart. Deepest condolences and prayers for healing from such a great loss.

Dear Greg, Mrs. Smith and Adam:
I met Paula on our first day of law school in September, 1998. We were part of the same "small group" that took all of our first year classes together.
Paula's warmth and kindness were immediately obvious and her smile would not only light up a room, but be an instant mood brightener whenever I saw her. When I learned of Paula's passing, I took myself on a trip down memory lane and went back to look at old photos. Seeing Paula's infectious smile and inner beauty shine in those photos still made me smile through the tears of the sad news of her passing. I will digitize those photos and share them with you.
I drove Paula home from Windsor to Grimsby a few times on my way to visit friends in Niagara and had the chance to meet her parents, whose down-to-earth nature was friendly and welcoming. It was easy to see where Paula got her warmth from. Those long drives were a chance to share a lot of personal conversations through which I had the pleasure of understanding what Paula had been through and just how strong her positive spirit was.
Paula, continuing to work at Vineland on occasion, also introduced me to Gewürztraminer. It is usually a wine I have in the fall and every time I see a bottle of Gewürztraminer, I hear Paula's voice telling me what I should be tasting in a nice one!
Although it was few years ago now, I remember where I was when I last spoke to Paula: we were talking about going to a law school reunion and I was telling her about making a career move that I was nervous about and she was so supportive and encouraging.
Although career and personal circumstances meant that I had not seen Paula in person in some time, she was a lovely part of a very happy time in my life and I am so grateful to have met her, to have known her and to have had the experience of being around someone who exuded positivity, radiance and hopefulness with every interaction.
In short, I am a very lucky person to have had the pleasure of knowing Paula.
I can't even imagine what you are all going through, but please accept my heartfelt condolences. I hope that happy memories of Paula will comfort each of you in this immensely difficult time.

My children went to St. Columba school with the Smith children. Paula was in Christopher's class and Adam was in Jane's class. Later they all, to include my son, Paul, attended Bishop Ryan high school. Paula was such a memorable little girl, who grew up to be a very accomplished woman. She was a high achiever from a young age, always determined, always enthusiastic, always caring. When Paula was diagnosed with leukaemia in her early teens, it didn't slow her down. She still maintained excellent marks, was involved in so many activities and was the valedictorian at graduation. Paula's hard work enabled her to become a well respected lawyer. She truly was a wonderful example of an unstoppable woman, who never let anything get in the way of reaching goals. She did this with grace and kindness. Paula was small in stature but mighty in all other ways.
My deepest sympathy to Paula's mother, Pat and to her brother, Adam. Although I don't know her husband Greg, I am very glad that you found each other and were able to share happiness together. As the Irish say, "Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal."

Although we didn't spend lots of time together the times we met, we picked up from where we left off!
