I have many happy memories of time spent with Russ and Vaughan building, flying and talking airplanes with my father Jack back in the 1960s, before I moved to the West.
Russ and Jack were long-time airplane pals and Vaughan and I got our pilot’s licences at age 17 through Air Cadet Flying Scholarships. Along the way, Russ guided us in the building of a downsized ground display replica SE-5, and he taught me how to fly a tailwheeler, a Piper J-3 Cub.
Russ had an amazing knowledge of aircraft construction and I enjoyed many hours helping build his and Vaughan’s Corben Junior Ace. We had great fun one summer as volunteers with Cole Palen’s Flying Circus when he visited the Hamilton Air Show with his Bleriot, Fokker D-7, and rotary-engined Nieuport 28 and Fokker Triplane. Russ also manned the wheel for a drive to Oshkosh, Wisconsin for the famous EAA fly-in.
Russ and Vaughan helped my father and myself, and fellow aviator George Rogers, with our McKimmon Monoplane restoration project. And many happy hours were spent at each other’s homes talking airplanes over cups of coffee.
All the best to Vaughan and the family.

As current president of the Experimental Aircraft Association of Hamilton (Chapter 65), I am reminded that a great many people have enjoyed building and flying airplanes as well as the community of like minded friends courtesy of Russ and a few other individuals who had the foresight to create this organization more than 60 years ago. As founding president, Russ was our invited guest at a 60th reunion party about two years ago, and the passion of aviation and life was clearly still in his eyes.
Our condolences go out to fellow pilot Vaughan and the rest of the Norman family. Russ was known and will be missed by many of our members. We will be sure to share his passing with the club, and observe a moment of silence in his honour.

I was saddened about the loss of Russ. My father, Jack, and I enjoyed his friendship of Russ for many years. I have many fond memories. Russ always maintained a positive attitude that was appreciated by everyone who knew him. He made a great contribution to the Experimental Aircraft Association and his lifelong enthusiasm for aviation really showed. I enjoyed writing major features on Russ's aviation career in the Canadian Aviation Historical Society Journal and in The Hamilton Spectator. It was a pleasure to keep in touch with Russ throughout the pandemic. I'm glad that he was able to enjoy the companionship of the Tiger Boys in his final years and share many stories.
My sincere condolences to the family and I wish "blue skies" for Russ.
