Nancy and I extend our sincere condolences to you Hildegard and all your family. We take comfort knowing Herb is in God’s hands. As I think about Herb, what stands out for me is that whatever he decided to do, he did it with passion, working tirelessly, always striving for the very best.
His love of cars has already been described by his family and I recall times in the 1950’s when a few of us would peek past the edges of the kraft paper covering car showroom windows to get a glimpse of the new models, which changed in design every year.
He had a wide range of interests. He took up goaltending in hockey at an age when most others were hanging up their skates and he was very successful at it. He not only built a model railroad with a complete scenic setting but then operated it in a complete conductor’s uniform.
He spent hours on his research of his “Heimat” and documenting it, doing so even on the several vacation trips he made to Danzig, acting almost as a tour guide. Herb was very proud of his German heritage.
Even in his final years since being diagnosed with cancer, he kept on battling, not giving in to despair or self-pity. It has been a privilege to have been a friend of “Beaver” and to have benefited in important areas of my life from his mentoring and example.
Sincerely, Ekkehard Heidebrecht

I just finished watching the celebration of Herb's life! Thank you so much for sharing so personally about your Dad, and for sharing his life story!
I knew Herb, Wilhelm and Renate when their Dad, "Mr. Harder", worked on our Dad's (Henry Koop) farm. Renate and I went to Fairview School together and I counted her as one of my very best friends. I really missed her when they moved to St. Catharines and we didn't see each other as often.
I was much younger than your Dad, but what I remember about him was his constant cheerful smile. I could hear in your reminiscing that this continued throughout his life.
My deepest sympathy to all of you, Herb's wife, children, grandchildren, siblings and friends as you mourn your loss but celebrate the man you loved.

I was sorry to read of your husband and father’s passing. Hildegarde, you and Herbert raised three lovely children with excellent values, strong work ethic and who showed kindness to all. It was my pleasure getting to know you through Oakridge school and I always enjoyed saying hello when I would walk by your lovely gardens. Please accept my sympathy at this time of sorrow. Sincerely, Jean (Mrs. HL)

Hildegarde and family. Bill and Renate and families, Our sincerest sympathy to you as you remember and grieve Herb’s passing. Many fond memories going back to living on the farm; Herb playing hockey (goalie), Herb beginning his career working with cars. And more recently seeing you at your church where Herb was volunteering serving at the tables during receptions at funerals.
Herb was always upbeat, especially when we hadn’t met for some time. The bonds we made with your parents, especially when Henry worked with your father on the farm all add to a wonderful book of memories. Rita and Henry Koop
