I only found out last week of Skips passing. It took me a few days to be able to email back to Carol after finding out. This is always such a tough thing to go through, my heart goes out to all of you.
Skip without fail sent shipwreck articles to me for the Mariners Weather Log. When I first began this job, he would remind me to send out a call for articles on the next issue. Skip was such a great guy to work with; patience and just happy to be able to send these much read articles out to the world. This magazine is global, and I did get emails wondering where the shipwreck article was. I told them, Skip was on vacation. :)
Please know my prayers and thoughts are with your family.

Dear Skip's family and friends,
I wish for you a time of peace and fond memories in the days ahead.
The lessons I have learned from Skip, mostly though his patient, caring, enthusiastic example, have stuck with me long after highschool track and field. His guidance and confidence in me as a young athlete and student, and later as a member of the community, is something I will forever be greatful for. My family was always happy to report running into Skip at the grocery store and having the opportunity to catch up. His amazing example of faith, encouragement, and community will be missed.

Our family’s condolences go out to the Gilliam family.
Skip was one of those special people that forever made a difference in many peoples lives. As a guidance counsellor at BDSS their was no better. His unique ability to relate to students and make us feel comfortable made him so special. As a grade 11 student coming to a new high school he immediately took me under wing. I always new he was keeping a fatherly eye on me. I personally feel that Skip was instrumental in directing me towards my career as a professional artist. Because of Skip, I had the confidence to follow my dream and choose a degree in Kinesiology that would aid in the development of my artistic career.
I was truly blessed to have known him. He will be truly missed.

Mr. Gillham,as we so affectionately shall always remember him, was such an inspiring leader and mentor, one of the rare teachers that connects to his students and that students have such an enormous respect and friendship for. I will always remember his kindness as one of my high school teachers, and as a mentor to his students at Beamsville High School. His connections with us after high school showed his sincere friendship to all of us, and he is my inspiration to teach and care about my students, as I now do at Western University. That huge, ever present ear to ear smile and laugh were gifts from the Lord, and taught us to infectiously love life and each other, just as he did. As we age we remember the people who taught us and guided us through our young lives, those who made a difference in guiding us, those that showed us the right path. I will forever remember my friend Mr Gillham, the smile, the patience and the wisdom that molded me through those impressionistic teen years. It is because of great mentors like him that I, and so many others, turned out OK. As we all hope that our lives have meaning, Skip made a difference in so many of his students lives, including mine, that I hope he knows how genuinely thankful we are for our friend and our mentor " Mr. Gillham. God rest your soul, my dear friend.

On behalf of the executive committee and members of the Toronto Marine Historical Society, I extend our deepest sympathies to the family. Skip had been a valued member of TMHS almost since its founding in 1968, and I had known him even earlier than that as our fathers were business acquaintances and my father encouraged Skip's interest in lake ships. Skip was a frequent contributor to The Scanner, our publication, and invariably each month I would get an inquiry from him as to what our next featured ship would be and whether we needed any information or photos from him for it. And if the next feature had not yet been chosen, Skip would eagerly suggest one. I was pleased to be co-author of one of Skip's most ambitious book projects.
May you find Peace, old friend. Ave atque Vale.

My day was deeply saddened by the news of Skip’s passing. I was privileged to work with Skip during my 5 years as principal at BDSS and valued highly his friendship and excellent advice about the school and the community. We shared a common interest in Lake Boats and Track and Field. For many years since leaving BDSS Skip kept me in touch with newspaper clippings about the successes of former students and staff especially those who stayed involved with Broadway Musicals! Skip was the kind of teacher and coach that every parent dreams their child at high school will learn from. He will be sorely missed in the Beamsville community.

Certainly a remarkable man who left a positive and lasting impression on so many people, judging by these numerous and eulogistic testimonies. I had the pleasure of meeting Skip - or Mr. Gillham as we politely addressed him - as a student at BDSS in the late 60's/early 70's where we was a very popular PhysEd teacher and a great cross-country coach (among other duties). Cross-country practices tended to be rather strenuous, but Skip had the uncanny ability to make them fun. And he wouldn't just crack the whip and tell us what to do - when it came to running up hills or doing an extra tough workout, Skip was right there running alongside us, sharing and easing the pain. If he is remembered so vividly after 45+ years, it is only because he was a truly great man, one of the best. It is with heartfelt sorrow that I learn of his passing - I convey my most sincere sympathies to his loving family.

Skip and I were Guidance colleagues for many years although we served at different schools. Toward the end of my career, I coached cross country for a couple of years so I had the pleasure of seeing him as a coach. Whatever the role, what enthusiasm and positive energy Skip brought! In our many contacts over the years, I always came away feeling more energized and positive about life.
Our last interaction took place in the hospital registration area several months ago. He explained his health condition in his usual open and honest way. He said that the hospital staff had offered to have him join a support group. With that wonderful glint in his eyes, he said, "I thanked them, but I told them I would develop my own support group."
What a pleasure, indeed an inspiration, to have known Skip!

It is sad to write these words, but I want Carol Doug and David to know how much Skip affected me in a positive way. Skip was not only a true friend but a mentor on how to make, keep, renew and refresh friendships. He was someone who never put himself in the spotlight but quietly and in an unassuming manner did so much and kept impressing me as the years went on . He took me to my first advance camp, my first road trip, he met me for lunch at Hart House at U of T to make me feel at home when I started University. We would go to Maple Leaf Hockey games together with Bob Smith (Bob's tickets of course) whom he introduced me to. He allowed Penny and me to be submit pictures for his bird books. He sent me copies of his boat books. He was so patient and inspirational to all who had the good luck to have him as a coach and mentor. He truly cared about all of his athletes both on and off the track and served as an outstanding role model. His light always shone through. Everyone remembers when they first met Skip, he was so busy with life. I met Skip at Pioneer Camp. The best times were the work camps, getting things prepared for summer camp. We worked until exhausted, and then Skip would find a football and a game got started. When he unleashed his humour alongside Ted Cormode, the lines and comments were legendary. Skip was the only one to make old Matt Wainwright smile (once). At Camp, Skip was in charge of packing up food and supplies for canoe trips. His mind must have brought out his big smile as he thought of substituting this for that...such as 2 extra cans of prunes when we were expecting applesauce.
In the early 1970's I would drive to Vineland to help clear the scrub brush from Skip and Carol's deep ravine property. Suddenly he would say "it's time to go" and I'm wondering if Carol had called us for lunch. Alas, no, it was a ship going through the canal that he had to go and photograph. I didn't understand that passion of his, but it didn't matter - it was his passion so off we would go. In sports Skip didn't focus on winning or losing. It was all about the competition that required you to bring your best. 10 days before he died, Felix Barbetti and I visited Skip. When he spoke of Doug and David, his voice was strong and the pain seemed to disappear for that moment. Take care of Skip, Dear God, as you have promised. Take care of him, Dear God, he is one of your best.

I personally strongly feel that Skip was instrumental in directing me toward post secondary education. Because of Skip's guidance I have had the drive to obtain a technical diploma, a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Education

My heart and prayers go out to all of you on the loss of such a wonderful husband, Dad and Grandpa
I too knew Skip from BDSS.....and then many years later connected again when he would come into the pharmacy to get his copy of The Standard ( Ships that Ply the Lakes)....so over the past 13 years I would get to see him almost daily....I didn't realize what a blessing that was going to be !
He got the biggest kick out of telling anybody who would listen to him that "Veronica and I went to school together!".....but would neglect to tell them he was the teacher and I was the student!.....he would just laugh and laugh some more !
Skip would tell me all about those students that he knew I knew from highschool....even what the current athletes in Lincoln were doing, etc.....he was so proud of his students/athletes
...we would have conversations about his family whom he loved and admired so much...
...and his faith...he never waivered.
what an inspiration Skip was to me....what a man of God
I am truly blessed to have known him
I'm going to miss that smile and twinkle in those blue eyes
Thank you God for sharing him with us

During my teaching career, I tried to do the same thing, both in cross-country teams I coached, as well as in the classroom. It didn't matter if a student of his was the top student or the struggler, or if the runner was in the top ten, or finished last. Everyone mattered. I was so blessed to have had Skip as a teacher and coach, and I hope I was able to instill his positiveness in even a fraction of those I worked with as well. Skip's legacy will live on.

Our sincere condolences to Carol, David, Doug, and their respective Families.
To do our friend " Skip " justice, one would have to write a small novel.
Skip was a friend to generations of Families, not only to us, but also to our Children, and our Grandkids. This was normal for him, and he always had the time of day when we met at the Hardware Store, Grocery Store or wherever. The Community lost a great man, who always had a smile, a positive attitude, and some encouraging words for all.
Rest in Peace Skip.
I know that Skip's Faith helped him in many of Life's trials, and would like to offer Isaiah 41: 10
" Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Sincere condolences to Skip's family and friends from us at the St. Catharines Standard. He wrote years and years of articles for us in his weekly Ships That Ply The Lakes column, and he had a seemingly endless wealth of knowledge about the ships, the canal and the seaway.
A lot of readers looked for his articles each week, and he will be missed.

My deepest sympathies to you all on your loss. Skip was a great teacher to so many, but most importantly to me, a terrific colleague of my parents. I know of so many students that would not have succeeded without his support and assistance. May he rest peacefully.
