My condolence to the Ellis/Begley Family, my thoughts and prayers are with you during this painful time. I met Doreen when I was working on the family tree we connected and kept in contact I was just thinking about her the other day and sent her an email so sorry to hear of her passing. She was a very sweet lady and when I spoke with her she was only friendly and very open. She would often send me updated Christmas letters on how the family was doing she adored her children and grandchildren and spoke of them often.

Doreen was very soft spoken and always smiling. We always enjoyed her visit with Geoff to Bayview. She will definitely be missed.

Doreen and I had a special bond, partially (largely?) because we were birthday buddies. On January 23rd, 1985, she celebrated her 53 birthday by babysitting my older siblings while mom was in labour with me. I'm sure that our family was not the only that she would have done this for, as Doreen embodied a serving, loving, caring woman of God.
Through the years, each year on our birthday she would give me a card and a book. I don't have all of them now, and through my 20s she often gave me a Chapters gift card to make my own choice. The book pictured here "Love Comes Softly" was a particularly special one. I remember that I finished the book so quickly (less than a week) that Doreen gave me the sequel the following week. I gobbled that one up as well, and she leant me the remaining 6 books in the series from her collection. My grade 7 English teacher noticed my ferocious reading of the series, and asked to borrow them as well, which Doreen was delighted to agree to.
Doreen and Geoff have always been a stable constant for me. I remember being so excited to finally be old enough to be in her grade 1&2 Sunday School class. I remember many visits to their home as a child and growing up. She always took such a genuine interest in my life, and I knew that she was someone who valued and treasured me. I'm sure I'm not the only one who felt this. Glen and I also had many visits with them in the early years of our marriage.
When I think of her life and ministry, I can see that Doreen lived out Titus 2:3-5 in her daily life. She was busy in her home, she purposefully taught younger women through her example and classes- certainly no one watching her could possibly have reviled God's word. I'm quite sure that she heard a loud and resounding "Well done, good and faithful servant!" when she got home a few weeks ago.
So I'm thankful for a loving friend, a faithful sister and mother in Christ, a beautiful example of a Godly woman. I look forward to a warm hug and a long chat when I get home, too. ❤️

We are so sorry to hear of Doreen's passing. Geoff and Doreen have always held a special place in our hearts from our years when Greg taught at GLCC. I remember staying in their home on one occasion and I remarked to Doreen about being amazed with how busy she was, being a wife and mother, working full time, supporting Geoff in his work at the school and having so many people into their home and she was able to keep her home so neat and tidy. She said, "well if something takes 5 minutes to do, I take 5 minutes and do it.". That impressed me as a young homemaker and I have thought of her and that advice often through the years. God's blessings on all of her family. She was a very special lady. Love, Greg and Betty Close

Doreen was a fine Christian woman. She was my basketball and volleyball coach during my years at Great Lakes Christian college. She was a fine coach. Practices were a very hard workouts because we just had one per week as GL did not have a gym at the time. We appreciated everything she did for us because we knew she wanted us to win the championship and we did during my Grade 12 year. I always wondered why she allowed me on the team in grade 9 because I was a bit of a klutz. I asked her one day and she said she saw potential in me. I think that speaks well for many of us. Doreen was able to see potential in people and work with it. It meant a lot to me as it did many girls, who were under her guidance. We love Doreen and will miss her. Heaven is richer.

Richard and I were honoured to know and love Doreen and family. We have so many memories of times spent together. Doreen was a wise woman who lived life well, serving those she came in contact with and her God. Blessings on Geoff and those kids we babysat so long ago and watched grow up to be a testimony to Doreen and Geoff’s parenting.

Whenever I have been asked through life who it was that I felt most influenced my teenage years, there was no need to think before replying. The answer was always "Coach Doreen Ellis." I did not realize it then, but Doreen was more important as a life coach than a sports coach. (In retrospect, what sports coach would sit with her players on the bench during a game and punch them in the arms out of enthusiasm and excitement when GL scored, then expect them to get off of the bench and use those same battered arms to score more points?? :) Mrs. Ellis, you influenced many in ways that you likely didn't know, serving them from the depths of yourself, your humility and giving spirit. The world is a better place to have had you in it. You will be missed for now, but your influence will live on through Eternity. Thanks, Coach. ❤

Doreen was an anomaly in this day and age . Everything about her was about giving with enthusiasm, to others. No selfies, no pushing others aside to climb to the top , no competing or boasting or pride . Only pure love, the kind that wants to see others succeed and flourish and become better. The kind that is vulnerable enough to put herself aside to nourish and listen and counsel and most important not to judge. What inner strength! How valuable an example for us all! How do i know all this? If you looked in her eyes , you knew it, if you tasted a buttery biscuit or home made pie , you knew it! If you met her children you knew it! And that's how i know it! There will be no brass plaques or statutes in the park commemorating a life well lived, but the legacy and lasting memorial lies in her beautiful family, a family with values, who honours and respects each other and has time to listen to each other's stories. Her children, her grandchildren and even her great grandchildren carry a little part of Doreen in their hearts and that's because she lived a lot like Jesus. And this is what He said " YOU live fully in me and now I live fully in them so that they will experience perfect unity , and the world will be convinced that you have sent me , for they will see that you love each one of them." (John 17; 23, TPT) Jesus , His love fully in her , spilling out into the world all around her, loving each one uniquely .......what an inheritance! Much love and blessings ! Heaven's applause and joy!

As a 5 day resident student at Great Lakes Christian Highschool, I spent many weekends as Becky’s guest in her home. The Ellis’s often entertained out of town guests and my job sometimes was to set the table. I remember how lovely the table looked, and I placed the plates and silverware where I thought they should go. Doreen instructed me in her lovely manner, how better to place the silverware and to please fill the glasses with the homemade grape juice that seemed to be around on most visits. I felt so included! I learned a lot just around the dinner table! Thank you Doreen for including me in such a lovely way!
