Ingeborg Last

Obituary of Ingeborg Last

Last, Ingeborg (nee Golisch) – Inge passed away peacefully early Friday, January 7th, 2022. Inge is survived by Jürgen, her caring husband of more than 60 years, sister Gerda in Germany, and was a loving mother to daughter Heidi (Mark) Peterson, son Roland (Katherine), and son Hans. She is predeceased by her brother Günter, and beloved daughter Christel. Adoring Oma to grandchildren Heather (Noah), Andrew, Trevor, and Kurt.

Ingeborg was born on February 23, 1935 in Posnan (Posen), Poland, with her twin brother Günter, to Bruno and Minna Golisch. The 2nd World War drove the family to flee to Verden, Aller, Germany. It was here that she met her husband-to-be, Jürgen, while attending a Christian Youth Group, the “Edelweiss Piraten”, before going to Sweden in 1953 to work as a nanny to 2 different families. Inge and Jürgen (who had since emigrated to Canada) corresponded during this time, and in 1961, they both returned to Germany where they were married, before emigrating to Canada for good in 1962. Inge stayed at home to raise her four children, then spent many years working in the laundry at the Prince of Wales Hotel in Niagara. Whatever she worked at, she was always singing or humming a happy tune or hymn.

Everyone who knew her will miss her cheerful joy, sense of humour, love of people, and her unshakeable spirit. Many thanks to the staff at Tufford Manor, St., Catharines for their care and friendship, and the kindness and care of the medical and nursing teams at Niagara Health, St. Catharines Hospital site.
