RIP Mr. Haskins! He was a most excellent English Teacher! He taught me at Simcoe and he totally fanned the flames to my love of poetry. In fact he did the same for many! I once wrote a poem for class that after class he pulled me aside and spoke with me for quite a while about it. It was a very raw and real poem called Daddy.. He got that poem of mine published in a community magazine for me. He was such an awesome teacher!

Dave Haskins is a person I wish I knew much better than I do. At the same time, that fact didn't seem to matter. He was simply a kind and sincere person who appreciated many of the same things that I do and little else mattered in our relationship. I knew he was one of those rare, wounded birds who was gravely hurt by the loss of his beloved Shirl. He surrounded himself with the arts to blur the pain. I met him at Hugh's Room and I wish I could remember which artist we'd seen. But he enjoyed my reviews and - not knowing his history or that he was an English teacher – appreciated his kind support and encouragement. He also would pipe up on Facebook when he appreciated a photo I'd posted, usually wanting to know more about it. We just clicked on many of those levels - music, photography, beautiful places and positive energy. We'd recently been back and forth about me purchasing some of his poetry books - me cheapening out over shipping costs but valuing buying them direct from him versus dealing with an Indigo. He was proud of them and of his touring talks - I had always expected I'd get to one to hear him speak on the subject. Thank you, Dave - for your kindness and open spirit. I trust we may meet again down some dusty road.

At the height of the Pandemic, we masked up for a quick visit . David hand delivered his newest book of poetry and he told me it would be his last. I didn’t believe he could stop writing. We taught and laughed together at the “ Guv”. Anglican prayers go with you, David .

I taught with Dave at Governor Simcoe-he was an excellent teacher, and a good person. He also was a very good vocal conductor when he worked on "Godspell" at the school. I am sorry to hear that he's left us. My condolences to his family

To the Haskins Family:
I used to sing duets with David in the choir of St. Albans Anglican Church in Beamsville. Our voices had not changed yet, so you can recognize that this was quite some time ago.
We (my family) knew the family as they initially moved into a house on Prudhomme's property kiddy-corner across the QEW (at the Ontario Street stop lights at that time) from us. His father Charles was the choir master at St. Alban's. As I remember, Pam loved horses.
I had lost touch with him after high school but I recently saw that he published a book with reference to his life in Beamsville. He emailed me on 14 Jan.'21, not so long ago.
Accordingly I am quite surprised to hear of his passing and am very sorry for your loss.

He was my English teacher at Governor Simcoe and the first adult to recognize my writing. I had missed class the day we had to read our poems out loud and a friend read mine. When I next saw him he shook his fist in anger at me from across the room and said “You!You wrote a hell of a poem! Why didn’t you say you could write!” And he was the first adult to say that to me. Rest in power David. Rail at the writers up there until they get better. Jeanne Bennett Simcoe 1986

He was so very good as a teacher, because he loved writing and sharing his love of it. He also cared about people and that showed every single day. I hope that his family and friends find some warmth from all of the wonderful memories you have of him, and the memories that others share with you. Even at Governor Simcoe, not many teachers would take the time to sign a yearbook, but he did for many, and here is what he wrote in mine.
"As phosphorus shines in midnight sand
so did we, who live in the shadow of stones
and scuff our way along the beach, remembering.
Best wishes always,
Dave"
Thank you Dave, for being a teacher and a human who cared, and led by example. You will not be forgotten.
