I am saddened and very, very sorry to hear that Kevin has passed away after a tough battle with cancer. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Darlene, and family, as they deal with this terrible loss.
I am so sorry that I never got to see Kevin before he left us. I found out from Mark Galvin last week that Kevin had hours to live, and that no more visitors would be allowed to see him.
I worked with Kevin between 1994 and 2000 at Effem Foods (Mars Inc.) in Newmarket. From the moment that I met him, he Impressed me as person who had a strong grasp on electrical controls, and was very analytical in his approach to any automation problems that he encountered. He enjoyed designing and implementing innovative controls automation solutions to improve manufacturing efficiencies and reliability. He was talented, passionate, dedicated, meticulous, and highly motivated, as he introduced high-speed, automated plc and servo controlled machinery to Effem Foods, which greatly improved throughput in spitting out millions of Mars, Snickers, and Milky Way bars at this Mars facility. I consider Kevin to be a Controls Automation genius, as his mastery of automated packaging systems was second to none. There are many examples of Kevin’s work at Effem Foods that demonstrated his exceptional controls expertise, but there is one, in particular, that I remember - when he was put in charge of his first automation project, a Mars-designed servo-controlled pick and place cartoning system. Kevin worked with Gordon Murray (Mechanical Engineer) to integrate a Demaurex (Switzerland) pick and place robot with the Mars Cartoner. While trying to run the Cartoner close to its maximum speed, Kevin and Gordon noticed that the Cartoner was intermittently crashing and losing control of its position. Kevin and Gordon worked together as an amazing team to debug the issue. Kevin meticulously dug deep into the Cartoner Servo program and was able to find a bug in the servo program and find the root cause of the issue. He rewrote the code, and after that the Cartoner performed flawlessly at its maximum speed. After Effem, Kevin went on to even bigger and better things to become co-partner with Chris Follows at Propack, as head of automation in developing robotic packaging equipment!!
Kevin was also a very generous, giving person, and supported many charitable causes. When I came to him looking for pledges for any of the charity events that I was participating in, Kevin was extremely generous with his monetary donations. He also participated in a number of charity events with me, including the 200 km Multiple Sclerosis Bicycle Ride, the 24-hour Relay Race for Cancer, the Toronto Marathon Relay Team for Cancer, and the Persechini Easer Seal 10km Run. Kevin approached these events with passion and with a desire to make a difference! There were a core group of Effem Associates participating in those events, including Kevin, myself, Mike Halbgebauer, Doug Moffat, Bill Allan, and Yonette Creavalle.
Kevin was also very active in extracurricular activities at Effem Foods, and he had a great rapport with everyone there. He participated with vigour in our 5K runs before work, and had a great laugh when he found out that Mike Halbegauer would sneak out the door at home at 5 AM to join those runs. He was also instrumental in forming the Noon Running Club at Effem, and inspired many Effem Associates to get active and exercise. He also participated in the annual Newmarket vs Bolton Soccer match, playing alongside Gordon Murray, Mark Galvin, Andy Pietrusiak, Dan Reynolds, Mike Halbgebauer, Yonette Creavalle, myself, and many others. Kevin participated in those events with passion and enthusiasm, and motivated others to get involved!!
All in all, Kevin was a great all-round person. He was brilliant in his field of expertise, Controls Automation. He gave generously of his time and money in supporting charitable causes. He worked well with others both at work and outside of work and motivated them to always give heir best, and in doing so, earned the admiration and respect of everyone he touched. Kevin achieved much in his 53 years on this earth. It is a shame that he was taken away by cancer at such a young age. Losing Kevin is an immense loss for family, friends, coworkers, and all who interacted with him. Such a talented, generous, caring, and inspiring man can never be replaced!! Kevin, may you rest in peace in Heaven.
Sincerely,
Terry King and family
