Obituary of Bill VandenBerg

Bill (Jan Willem) VandenBerg

September 25, 1950 – January 24, 2023

It is with sadness that we announce that Bill passed away peacefully at the age of 72 on Tuesday, January 24th. We celebrate that he is now resting in peace in the arms of his Lord.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife Ruth, son Peter (Elaine), daughter Jennifer, and grandchildren Megan and Shawn.  He will be lovingly remembered by his sisters, Corrie Hendriks and Johanna Koebernick in BC.  Bill was predeceased by his parents Rev. Bill and Hendrika (Rita) VandenBerg.

Bill was born in Den Haag, the Netherlands and moved to British Columbia, Canada at the age of 9. His father decided to pursue theological studies which necessitated the family moving to Holland, MI.  His father’s first church was in Guelph, Ontario where Bill met his lovely wife Ruth.  After they were married, Bill and Ruth moved to western Canada, living in Surrey, BC and Hinton, Alberta before deciding to move back to Ontario to be closer to family.  They were married for 52 years.

Bill had a passion for sailing, photography, all things mechanical or computer related which led him to many different professions over the years.  Unfortunately, Bill’s struggle with MS and later a major stroke, caused many health and mobility difficulties for him so he moved into the United Mennonite Home in Vineland where he resided for 14 years.  Bill was a big man with a big smile and he enjoyed visits, especially when they involved home baked goodies or something sweet.

The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Woodland and the entire staff at the United Mennonite Home for their exceptional care of Bill over the many years he resided at the Home.  You were his extended family and treated him with much kindness and respect.

A private family service will take place at a later date.

Memorial donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the MS Society or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
