I have fond memories working with John at A. N. Myer. No one who knew John could help but be impressed with his dedication, enthusiasm, wealth of experience and his Christian Faith. You will be missed.

Dear Family of Mr Eckert.
I am very sorry to read of Mr. Eckert's passing. He was a great teacher and not just about history.
In 1972, I had just turned 13 years old. I was a very young 13. I was somehow elected as the Grade 9 Boys Representative on the A.N. Myer Student Council. Mr. Eckert was the Faculty Advisor. He attended every Student Council meeting. The Executive, led by the late Dave Brown, were all 18 years old, driving cars, and, it seemed, had what would now be called "significant others" on the Student Council. Mr. Eckert took me under his wing, encouraged me to offer my thoughts, and not to be intimidated by a 5 year age difference. He was avuncular before I knew what the word meant. He was patient and kind. He was worldly. He made me feel that everyone had something to offer and to respect different ideas. He was an outstanding history teacher who taught us Grade 11 and Grade 13 history. His classes were stimulating and he prepared us very well for college and university.
At a time when A.N. Myer had an outstanding staff including Mr. Zanutto, Mrs. Yao, Mr. Cockburn, Mrs. Sinclair, Mr. Moss, Mr. Majer, Mrs. Moss, Miss Ashby, and Mr. Mazzone, Mr. Eckert was the best of the best.
His greatest gift to approximately 30 of us took place in March of 1976 when he, Mrs. Eckert, and Mr. Hudson and his wife took us on a March break trip to the USSR. It was a once in a lifetime experience in the middle of the Cold War.
Over his entire career, Mr. Eckert probably taught approximately 4,000 different students.
There were 4,000 of us.
There was only one of him.
Thank you for making a difference in my life.
Rest in peace, Mr. Eckert.
You have earned it.
Sincerely,
John Carruthers, A.N. Myer, Class of '77

Dear Eckert Family,
What a wonderful tribute! As I read I could, in my mind's eye, see him moving quickly and enjoying life in a robust way. I believe the measure of a person is in how well they love and how well loved they were in turn. John Eckert was a rich man indeed.

Dear Vi and family,
I am so sorry to hear about John's passing this week.
I have very fond memories of 'Mr. Eckert' as my history teacher at A.N. Myer in Grade 11 and in Grade 13.
It was funny to meet him again years later as your husband, at Battlefield School Staff parties.
Cherish all the wonderful memories of all the good times you have shared together and as a family.
Thinking of all of you and sending hugs and prayers.
Sincerely,
Pam Janvary Gillespie

I was fortunate to have John as my history head in Niagara Falls. I was 22 and new to the teaching profession and John encouraged me and complimented my newly acquired teaching skills.
I worked with John again in Welland where he was my vice principal and he continued to mentor me.
He was such a gentleman and I know he will be missed. My condolences to the family

Your dad wad such a special man in the life of our family and particularly in the life of my dearest Rachel Elliott. He presided and prayed over her in Intensive care at Sick Kids...and dedicated her to Christ at a time when her life was particularly fragile. So much I could say..yet still the spirit of God only could translate my truest sentiments. I love him dearly, and sincerely wish you all, God's greatest comfort as you mourn his loss, now and in the upcoming days and months . He will be dearly missed by you, and by my family as well. Prayers, Janet Elliott Warkentin.
