Obituary of Helen Neufeld

Helen (Lena) was born to John and Mary Werstroh (Martens) on July 14, 1931. She grew up on her parent’s farm in Glenbush, Saskatchewan. She was the second of 6 children John (deceased), Helen, Henry, (deceased) Violet, Katie (deceased) and Ernie (deceased).

Helen moved from Glenbush at age 15 to stay with her maternal aunt and uncle who lived on Wall Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It was here that she met her future husband, Cornie, who lived across the road from her aunt and uncle.

They were married in 1949 in her home town in Saskatchewan and began their married life not far from Cornie’s parent’s and her aunt and uncle’s. Their first child, Bev, was born while they lived there. The second move (there would be more to come) came a few years later and so did three more children (Gary, Brian and Cheri). The next move was to Hunter Road where their fifth child, Rodney, was born. Helen and Cornie have 11 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.

Helen was a hard worker and took pleasure and pride in her work. Her main job was inside the home raising her children but this wasn’t her only job. She also worked on the family farm, did housework for others and helped countless people in the community. Her energy seemed unending, only matched by her compassion and devotion to her family and others.

Helen had an uncanny ability to connect with people, regardless of their age, social station, ethnicity, gender or emotional/mental stability in life. She seemed not to judge people and was blind to prejudices. People were drawn to her and this both gave her pleasure and assisted so many people that she met throughout her long life.

Helen was devoted to her husband, Cornie, who she had just short of 73 years with. To watch them together was gratifying and admirable. In Helen’s last few years, she struggled with dementia. After Cornie’s death just over a year ago, Helen’s ability to live her life as she had was tested but she didn’t lose her identity as a passionate helper of those who needed assistance. After her death, while living at Albright Manor, fellow residents and staff made it known that they lost a very special light in their world.

Helen leaves behind her only sibling, Violet Michlik, her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be missed and remembered.

Helen will be laid to rest alongside her husband Cornie at Lakeshore Cemetery early Thursday morning. Helen would be proud to know that she will be carried to her resting place by, Greg & Gavin Dueck, Colten & Danielle Neufeld, and Spiery Michael-Mikhail & Becca Hagen.

Funeral service will take place on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at 2:30pm at the Vineland Chapel of Tallman Funeral Homes (3277 King St., Vineland) with visitation beginning at 2pm.  Refreshments will be served in the Fireside Room immediatley following the service.
