Mr. Harrison played a strong leadership role in the lives of many students who attended his phys-ed classes and played football for the Bulldogs he coached. He was dedicated to good health and physical fitness, and offered great encouragement. I will personally remember him for reminding me often on the field "don't think" and pulling back his shoulders as he passed me in the halls to promote better posture. His dedication and commitment were hallmarks of his impact on countless students. My formative years as a young adult were blessed by knowing him as both a respectful teacher and a demanding coach. I'm "triple-option" lucky to have had Mr. Harrison as my Phys. Ed. teacher and high school football coach while at SWC, but also as my quarterback coach for my freshman season at Queen's. While also a family friend, Mr. Harrison / Harebone is without doubt one of the most positive influences in my life. Condolences to the Harrison family. We'll celebrate his life until the end of ours! Darren Johnston

Thank you, Mr. Harrison, for instilling upon me (and ALL your SWC students) the importance of practicing what you wish to do your best at. Something I have used my whole life, including other facets besides sports. So glad to have had you in my life for the few years that I did. You have left that legacy for all those who knew you. Again ... THANK YOU !
My condolences to his family.

Coach Harrison took who ever showed up and wanted to play football every year, some of us had never played the organized game of football. Coach Harrison's patience prevailed, teaching us to have fun and learn how to play the game and play to win. One year under Coach Harrison and you couldn't wait for the next. He also taught us much more than just how to play football, teamwork, respect and also to take pride in the team and yourself. Game days were unique, shirt and tie were expected, this made you feel special. All of the little things he showed us over the years have stuck with us through our lives. His sense of humor was great, I was present for the coach's induction into the St.Catharines Sports Hall of Fame. I remember taking him a bottle of "RED" wine at which time he asked me if they might have some "BLUE" instead. I'll never forget that. Coach "Jimmer" will be missed. My condolences to the entire family.

Harbone and I were teammates on the Queen’s basketball team in the 1950’s. We had a lot of fun times and some success winning the league Championship in the 1956/57 season, which was a first for Queens’s in a long time. Harbone demonstrated excellent leadership with a great sense of humour.
Sincere condolences to Ann and the extended family.
May he rest in peace,

I tell everyone that Jim Harrison was the best coach I ever had. I haven't seen him in 40 years but I think of him almost monthly. He was an extremely dedicated coach and did an outstanding job with SWC football - always a contender even though such a small school.
But it was his teaching that also stands out. "Everyone is born with a potential, X, and you must strive to achieve it. You won't get there, but it's worth the try." And his classes on psychology were very good and I still remember his discussions on "rationalizing" - and I still ask myself "Am I rationalizing?" when I'm confronted with my own poor behavior.
I didn't know of his Ukrainian heritage and I would have liked to ask him about that. I follow the war in Ukraine daily now and it brings me to tears, and I've read a lot of Ukrainian history in the last 2 years. I'm sorry that Jim didn't live to see Ukraine finally liberate itself from its Russian neighbor so that his cousins can have some peace. But I'm sure he'll be watching from above.
My condolences to all of his family.
Gordon Denny, SWC '81

Harrison Family: so sad to hear of Coach Harrison's passing. It brings back so many pleasant memories of highschool sports. He was so respected by his players and always so upbeat. I still have a photo from the St. Cath Standard (circa1960)of John Gammage Coach and myself posing pre-season for a review of the various school teams that year. I even used that ,photo recently in a lecture about fitness/exercise and affect on drug therapy . He never liked his players swearing and told us to say "poopies" instead of that other word.
What a great human being with a great career

Mr. Harrison will always be my favourite high school teacher. A great man, and a wonderful role model. As a Roma soccer player growing up, he saw me kicking the football during phys-ed classes, and talked me into kicking for the Junior football team, After a few practices, I just found this wasn't for me. He was also my junior basketball coach, and although I sucked at that sport, he taught me about humility, and preserverance. He brought out the best in his players. Condolences to Peter, Steve and the rest of the family. What a wonderful, full life. It was an honour to know Peter at SWC, a fine athlete.

I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to be coached by Hairbone with the Queen's football team. Jim coached with passion and a positive voice that always gave you confidence. I have been lucky enough to continue in the sport as a coach and I use all the drills Jim had me do (except the wishbone ones) with all of the QB's I coach. My condolences to his family.

I can attest to the fact that, during my era of Queens football 1988-1992, Hairbone was loved by everyone whom he came into contact with. He was involved with special teams, so I, as a long snapper, had the opportunity to meet with him quite often at practice. He was always good to me.

His dedication to athletics and teaching was exemplary will never be forgotten, neither will the football trip to Virginia or the constant reminders about your "posture" (lol). He was definitely the most influential teacher I had! Many thanks for helping me reach my "X"!

I had the pleasure and honour to play football for Coach Harrison from 1975-1977 at SWC. I also played sports with his sons Steve and Peter at that time. He brought much needed discipline to a group of teenagers and taught us how to be a team. To this day I still refer to one of his mantras about exercise. Get your heart rate up to at least 120 beats per minute for at least 20 consecutive minutes to consider that you have exercised. My condolences to the Harrison family.
