Obituary of Ruth Jane Scull

SCULL, Ruth Jane

January 18, 1926 – September 30, 2023

It is with great sadness that the Scull family announces the passing of their mother, grandmother, aunt, and dear friend Ruth Jane Scull (nee Fleming) at the age of 97. She will be lovingly missed by her sons Paul (Jackie) and Kevin (Catherine). Ruth was a very involved and caring grandmother in the lives of her grandchildren Shannon (Derek), Jeff (Melanie), Samantha (Raghu), Maggie (Steven) and Laura (Patrick). Grandma also enjoyed seeing and hearing about her great-grandchildren River, Soleil, Jack, Sawyer, Connor, and William. She is also survived by her nieces Judy (Brian), Vicki (Peter), Peggy (Greg), and her nephews A.D. (Vernah), John (Glynnis) and Andy (Tammy). Also survived by her grand nieces and nephews.

Ruth was predeceased by Beverley (1995) her devoted and much-loved husband of 47 years; her parents Aubrey (1937) and Margaret (1980); her siblings Robert (1922), Dorothy (1922), and Arthur (2014); her brother-in-law Victor Scull (1979) and sisters-in-law Jean Campbell (2009) and Valerie Fleming (2022); and her nephew Thomas Fleming (2015).

Ruth was a person who thoroughly enjoyed socializing and being with others. She possessed an infectious laugh that filled the room. Ruth was a giving person willing to help others when the need arose. She was a dear friend to many, both in the community and within her church. Ruth was a wonderful host and contributor at many social gatherings. In her daily life, she balanced her time between raising her family and running the family farm with her husband.

Ruth was born in Beamsville on January 18, 1926, and was raised by her caring and loving parents with her brother Art. Upon the sudden death of their father in 1937, the children were called upon to help their mother with the family chicken hatchery business. Ruth met her future husband Beverley in the mid-1940s, and they were married on October 23, 1948. Ruth moved to the Scull family farm, Eastleigh Orchards, in Jordan Station and began her life there helping dad manage the farm. Ruth adapted well to her new life and soon developed a wonderful network of friends in the Jordan Station and Jordan farming communities that would last a lifetime. She gave birth to her two sons in 1953 and 1957. Ruth was a faithful and long-time member of the Church of Christ in Jordan. She again developed another group of lifelong friends as she became an active member of her church deeply committed to her faith in her daily life. After selling the farm in the mid-1970s, mom and dad were able to enjoy vacations within Canada and to the United States and Europe. Through the 1980s and early 1990s mom welcomed her five grandchildren into her life. She was a supportive grandmother who took much pleasure watching them grow up and following all their sporting adventures. In 1995, mom lost dad, the love of her life. Despite this terrible loss, she carried on and continued to live a very full and independent life drawing on the support of family and many community and church friends. In 2018, mom transitioned to Orchard View Apartments in Vineland where she received the excellent care and support, she needed in her later years.

The family wants to extend its sincerest thanks and appreciation to the Orchard View Apartments’ staff headed by Bonnie Fahnestock and Stephanie Easton. The staff’s daily care and acts of kindness and encouragement given to mom were greatly appreciated. To the staff, especially Kathy, Debbie, Rosemary, Lucas, and Janet, we could not have done this without you. To the staff at Hotel Dieu Shaver, we thank you for the excellent palliative care our mother received. Also, special thanks to Dr. Cari Reed and the Beamsville Medical Centre team for providing professional care and support to mom for many years.

Finally, we want to thank mom for being our mother and grandmother. We have been so fortunate to have such a loving parent and grandparent who has cared for us, helped us grow up, and has always been so interested and present in our lives. She has set a wonderful example for us to follow. As we grow older, we certainly appreciate her importance in our lives more and more. We know you have had a good life. Give dad and papa a great big hug from all of us.

The family will receive friends at the Tallman Funeral Home, 3277 King Street, Vineland, on Wednesday, October 4, from 6-8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at this location on Thursday, October 5, at 11:00 a.m. with visitation for one hour before the service. A reception will follow at the Tallman Fireside Room. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society on behalf of Ruth.
