Obituary of Fred Berg

Fred Berg passed peacefully into the presence of God the morning of October 20, 2023 at Heidehof Home.

Born January 8, 1936 in Reesor, a Mennonite settlement in northern Ontario, to parents Peter and Maria Berg (nee Peters). He was the last of 12 children, 4 who passed before Dad was born. In 1945 he moved with his parents to the St.Catharines area and lived on a farm on Hwy#8 . He attended Fairview Public School for 5 years. Then he moved to Leamington where he attended United Mennonite Educational Institute (UMEI) and graduated there in 1954. He was baptized in the St.Catharines United Mennonite Church on June 9, 1957 by “Aeltester” P.J. Heinrichs. This was where he met and married his wife Selma (Fast) on July 9, 1960 and this year they celebrated 63 years together. At first they lived in St.Catharines, eventually moving to a house that he helped to build in Jordan. They were foster parents, then raised 3 children of their own.

Fred was a plumber for many years, even running his own company Regional Plumbing and Heating. He participated in many church activities, singing in the choir, was a church usher, volunteered at the MCC Relief Sale in New Hamburg in the rollkuchen/watermelon booth, at annual church Christmas bazaars, and always willing to help where he could. Fred enjoyed bowling and gardening. They enjoyed many backyard BBQs with family and friends. Weekly get togethers with “the gang” to play cards, celebrating birthdays, hosting quite a few Sunday dinners were some of the activities that he enjoyed.

Fred is survived by his wife, Selma, children Terry (Cathy) Berg, Glenn Berg, Gail (Mike) Roth. Grandchildren Justin, Zachary, Anna-Maria, Victoria and Clayton. Fred will be missed by Eric and Marlies Berg, Lora Berg, Erika Fast as well as by many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, siblings in Russia, as well as Constantine (Jessie), Herbert (Marga), Hugo, Anna (Henry) Klassen, Mary (Cornelius) Penner, Albert (Margaret) Berg. Many thanks to the excellent staff at Heidehof for their compassionate care of Dad especially these past few months when he had numerous health related issues.

The family will receive friends and family for visitation on Thursday, October 26 from 6-7:30pm at the St.Catharines United Mennonite Church, 335 Linwell Rd. Another visitation on Friday, October 27 at 10 am, followed by service at 11am. Lunch will follow then interment at Victoria Lawn Cemetery, 431 Queenston St. If desired, memorial donations may be made to: Juravinski Cancer Centre in Hamilton or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
