Obituary of Leo Hendriks

Leonardus "Leo" Hendriks 1934-2024

With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of our Dad, Leo Hendriks one month after his 90th birthday on May 18th, 2024. He was born in Holland and at age 15 immigrated to Canada along with his parents and 10 siblings, eventually settling in Beamsville.

He was married for 65 years and just lost his devoted loving wife Catarina 28 days before his death. He is survived by children : Cathy (Bill), Marian (Kevin), Brian (Vicki). Grandchildren : Robert, Michael (Nadine), Madison (Brandon), Nick, Jeff (Irena), Brad (Kate), Melissa (Sebastien), Morgan (Amanda), Quinn (Sean). Great Grandchildren : Scarlett, Bella, Victoria, Avery, Jack and Evelyn.

Dad devoted his life to his family working hard at numerous jobs to support us. He eventually was hired by the Lincoln school board as a custodian. He retired from his position as Head Caretaker from Grimsby high school at age 65. His family and beautiful yard were his greatest joys. Dad spent many hours outdoors with us swimming, having campfires, taking us for walks and camping trips. His love for his yard continued into his retirement years, working alongside mom in their beautiful gardens.

He was very involved in Scouting from an early age. In Beamsville he was our local Scout/Sea Scout leader for many years. He was also a foster parent in his younger years and then a long-term caregiver of 2 medically challenged children. He was a wonderful Opa, and in 2007 he also stepped in as a devoted "surrogate father" to his Grandson Robert and Michael after their father died at a young age.

Retirement never slowed him down. They soon moved into their Muskoka cottage during the warm weather months where he could be found doing new projects, swimming, walking his trails and of course campfires. He always loved to sing with us and became an active member of the Lincoln Seniors choir. At home he spent many hours reading and doing puzzles. Dad was a fixture in the local "craft show scene", spending many hours at home creating wooden crafts to display/sell and gift to others. His most popular items were his wooden sets of deer.

Dad was robbed of his later years by his battle with Dementia. But even at the very end his very polite demeanor, sense of humour and infectious smile still shone through! We would like to thank his Home Care nurses Tracey and Paul for their compassion, family support and wonderful daily in home care. Also the PSW's from both Care Partners and Bayshore plus the caring compassionate staff at Deer Park Villa.
