So sorry to hear of John's passing and send you our condolence to you, Ada, and family.
John is my cousin and knew him more when he lived in Houston, BC many years ago. The last time I saw John was at his father's funeral. My mother, Grace Mulder, was a sister to John's father.
May you feel His peace, comfort and strength during this sad time and in the weeks ahead.

My friendship with John goes back to the 1970s. We were young school administrators trying to ride the wave of radical school reform that was threatening to fracture the growing Christian school movement. I have fond memories of many good meeting as we invented policies for nearly everything. We both appreciated the new spirit but felt the traditional wisdom was also valuable for progress. In the 1980s John and I debated how to situate Redeemer College in order to retain its reformed integrity and also contribute to Canadian Society now.
In the 1990s we turned our attention to golf as the more civilized way to discuss politics while joking about slices, hooks, mulligans and gimmies. We debated the most serious topics at the 19th hole, such as Ontario Conservatism and the nature of government funding for christian schools. After we both retired in the 21st century, our game got more relaxed. We no longer had to solve serious issues with deadlines and could share the joys and tribulations of our maturing families.
John's sudden passing to glory, without time to say goodbye, made me realize how much I valued his insights and humor over the decades.Though we had our serious differences, we remained civil and respectfully adjusted our positions. We were both committed to serving God's Kingdom and that was the ultimate norm for our reformed praxis. May Ada and the family be comforted by God's abundant Grace.

It was a great privilege to work with John at Redeemer in enlarging the public recognition for the teacher education program. What a passionate, dedicated and wise strategist who knew how to deal constructively with those who were taken up by the spirit of the age.
While we grieve his passing and wonder why his journey couldn't have been longer, we thank the Lord for his faith and vision and pray that the Spirit will comfort for his family and also that the Lord will use this moment for the rededication of the Christian community to the cause he so ably led and fostered.

Deepest condolences to all of you! I am so very sad to hear of the death of such a wonderful gentleman! I worked for Professor Vriend when I was a student at Redeemer. He was patient, hilarious and smart. He stuck up for me when I was rude to the staff in the office....he used it as an opportunity to help me learn and grow! I always have had the deepest respect for him. He will be deeply missed and I use his teachable moments in my daily life in how to care for young people....his spirit lives on! Deep peace to all of you!

John was my principal at Beacon and we drove to SUNY in Buffalo to work on our Ph.D. degrees.
I preceded him at Redeemer but only as a fill in.
We were always going to play golf together...sometime.
I remember some of his wise proverbs.
My condolences to the family.
We will all miss his smile and laughter.
