I heard recently of Wally's passing. My condolences to you, Monica, and your mom. This brought back a flood of memories. We grew up in the same church and became fast friends participating in boys clubs hikes and a range of youth activities. Our friendship bond was strengthened during a family camping trip to Ipperwash Park when we found out from our parents that we were distant cousins. We spent many Saturdays at Lock 1 begging coins from the crews of the foreign ships. I still have my collection that remains a reminder of him. I remember sitting in the balcony at church with a map on my lap asking Wally the capitals of remote countries all over the world. He never missed. It was hard watching him become changed when living with him in student housing. Even there, while he never studied, he would ace his exams. A brilliant mind! When my wife and I lived in Hamilton, I would visit Wally in the psyche ward or bring him to our home. Often we would go for long drives and talk. My kids still remember Uncle Wally. I lost touch with him after moving from Hamilton. I regret not searching him out. That said, I did not forget him. Monica, if appropriate, please let me know details of the celebration of his life. Blessings on your family during this time of remembering.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Walter's passing. He was a close friend through public and high school and was Best Man at my wedding. We had some great times and adventures together and I have many happy memories of the times spent with him over the years that I will always cherish.

The news of Walter's death comes with deep sorrow and with memories of the grace and caring performed by Katie, Dietrich and Monica. After 25 years of horrible experiences in Europe of the kind that many of their relatives did not survive, Katie and Dietrich had made a home and begun their family. They joined the extended families of Kroekers and Regiers who had had similar experiences several decades earlier and had made homes near St. Catharines. Children Monica and Walter were thriving. Eventually the little family rallied and then supported Walter during his many years of difficulties. Disabilities of age eventually incapacitated Dietrich and Katie. So Monica, though suffering the death of her spouse Wayne, continued with the caring of Walter. Commiserations and deep gratitude, Monica, from your Regier cousins.

Mrs. Regier and family,
I went to Prince of Wales with Walter, then Laura Secord, then first year Waterloo University (meeting for coffee). Growing up I remember Walter as being a kind, respectful, amazing young man and childhood friend. He was one of my favourites. Years later when I ran into him I could see he was struggling but he had the same gentle soul. I am so sad that he had to go through so much to finally find his peace. We all cared for him deeply and I will remember him most in happy times at our get togethers in grades seven and eight. Such a long time ago but those were the best memories that I will hold in my heart forever. My heart goes out to you.

Dear Mrs Regier, Monica and family.
It makes me sad to see this. You have my deepest sympathies.
I still have fond memories of growing up with Walter. We were baptized together. As time and circumstance would have it, I have mostly lost contact with those people. I live in Kingsville now. Moved to this area shortly after mom and dad came here to Leamington.
It is so good to know that his sense of humour or his ability to engage in interesting conversations was never lost. Now he is at peace. Shalom
Sincerest condolences and God bless you all.
Ken.
