Obituary of Martha Louise Wiens

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Martha Louise Wiens on Sunday, January 17, 2021 at the age of 81. 

Martha was born in Niagara-on-the Lake, Ontario to John and Mary Dyck on January 9, 1940. Her early years were spent working on the family farm, developing her musical talents and forming deep friendships that would last a lifetime, carrying her through numerous challenges. She graduated from Eden High School and went on to become a teacher. Although her career as an educator was short, she always spoke fondly of those days, and her teaching gift was evident even years later as she spent time with her treasured grandchildren. Chorus Niagara was an important part of Martha’s life for many decades and allowed her to nurture her love of music, which she passed on to her daughters.  She also shared her musical talents as a church organist and played for many weddings, 99 of them before her own!

Martha is survived by daughters Rebecca (Paul) Belletrutti of Calgary, AB, and Janice (Ed) Janzen of St. Catharines, ON; brother Victor (Erika) Dyck; siblings-in-law Hans Juergen Wiens, Linde Wiens, Ingrid Wiens, Armin (Ulla) Hinz, Dorothea (Rudy) Enns, and many nieces and nephews. Her grandchildren Benjamin, Matthew, Isaac, Clark and Evangeline were the lights of her life. She was pre-deceased by her husband Fred in 1998. 

Martha will be remembered as a wonderful mother, loving Oma, devoted friend, avid gardener, and talented musician; she was a remarkable woman of quiet faith who always put others’ needs above her own, right up until her final days.

Martha’s family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Greenway and all of the staff at Tabor Manor for their compassionate and dignified care. One of Martha’s last wishes was for a joyful celebration of her life where all those who meant so much to her could gather to sing and share food and stories.
